Gradient is initiating a survey department and is looking for qualified individuals to kick-start our program. The position can be located in Gradient’s Fayetteville, Durham, or Cary, NC office.

Position Description:

The Survey Crew Member will assist the Survey Party Chief in completing field survey assignments. This person should possess the ability to operate field survey equipment and to perform field calculations and complete proper land surveying techniques.

Responsibilities:

• Assist the Survey Party Chief in making plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way and control survey projects.
• Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers and contractor representatives.
• Gather field survey data through use of conventional and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) methods.
• Operate and maintain surveying equipment responsibly, including electronic total station, data collector and GNSS equipment.
• Prepare and review organized field notes and drawings.
• May perform mapping compliance or other related office survey duties as a temporary assignment as required.
• Operation of a company vehicle to travel to and from job sites.

Qualifications: The preferred candidate should have the following qualifications and experience:

• Five (5) or more years of experience in land surveying as part of a field survey team. Experience in construction layout is beneficial.
• Associate’s degree in surveying/geomatics or related field preferred but not required.
• Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level I or II desired but not required.
• Progressive experience with field surveying practices and techniques including radial staking, uses and capabilities of survey instructions including electronic total stations, data collectors, network control stations and GPS measuring equipment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong problem solving and technical skills.
• Reliable, self-motivated, engaged and team-oriented.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, collect data, operate and maintain complex, precision surveying instruments.
• Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with company policy.
• Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
• Valid North Carolina Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
• Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Working Conditions:

The work is performed outdoors in areas such as construction sites, swamps, residential neighborhoods, roadway work zones and wooded areas in various weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:

To perform the essential functions of the job, individuals may be required to perform moderately strenuous tasks such as lifting and carrying instruments weighing up to 50 pounds over rough terrain, clear vegetation, dig holes and drive stakes with hand tools.
