Status: 100%, Full-Time, Exempt, Regular

Probation: 180 days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: As one of Houston’s largest and most experienced provider of LGBT medical and mental health services, we help LGBTQ people lead healthier, happier lives, by keeping their minds and body well. We are also one of the few Centers in the nation with providers who specialize in primary care for LGBTQ people and with a research team working to advance the care and treatment of people in our community.

JOB SUMMARY: The Provider is responsible for the management of patient care in the Houston and surrounding areas. This will include an assigned panel of patients for whom the Provider will deliver comprehensive continuity medical care. Other clinical responsibilities may include more focused medical care in our Sexual Health and Education Program (SHEP), and other intermittent clinics as may be established to meet the medical needs of the Center's patient population.

Successful applicants will have an interest in externally and internally funded research. A provider with interest in developing their research portfolios in infectious diseases, sexually transmitted infections studies are preferred as they will synergize with our outstanding resources, strengths, and current funding.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The diagnosis and treatment of adults for all medical conditions typically in the scope of a Family Provider, managing the delivery of comprehensive primary medical care for an assigned panel of patients.
  • Sees clients in SHEP for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections; prescription of Pre and Post Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV; prescription of initial antiretroviral medication for clients newly diagnosed with HIV as part of the Center's Rapid Start Protocol.
  • Works closely with other clinic staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to patients.

Provides necessary referrals for specialty care according to protocols and standards as required by payors or as developed by the Center; reviews consult with specialists and speaks with consultants directly as desirable or requested.

  • Arranges for appropriate referrals to nutrition, case management, adherence counseling and other services as needed.
  • Administers or orders appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Provides patient education as required.
  • Review lab results in a timely manner.
  • Reviews refill requests in a timely manner.
  • Assists with the disposition of urgent and walk-in visits by participation in the "doctor of the day" rotation or other systems as may be developed to provide timely access for patients requiring medical attention.
  • Through consultation with the Director of Clinic Operations helps to establish realistic targets for the optimal number of patient visits/FTE in a twelve-month period and a weekly schedule template that assures meeting these targets.
  • Provides coverage for other medical providers as needed.
  • Using the electronic medical record maintains detailed notes and codes visit appropriately for billing purposes.
  • Participates in Quality Management and Peer Review activities as needed.
  • Seeks consultation from staff physicians as needed, especially when a patient's problems are especially complex or if the patient's condition is not responding as expected.
  • Works closely with the Director of Research and Research staff to recruit appropriate candidates for clinical research activities.
  • Conducts patient exams as part of clinical research activities as needed.
  • With the assistance of staff Benefits, Coordinators complete patient benefit forms as required in a timely manner.
  • Maintain sufficient Continuing Education Units (CEU) as required by the State Board of Nursing and/or State Board for Physican Assistants for license renewals and as may be required to maintain any certifications necessary to demonstrate proficiency in a specialty area relevant to the Provider's clinical practice.
  • Participates in administrative assignments. All providers will attend, at a minimum, the following meetings:
  1.  Peer Review - twice monthly
  2. Administration, General Provider meeting, each on a rotating basis weekly
  3. Information Technology for EMR training or customization, weekly.
  4. Case Conference - twice monthly
  5. Multi-Disciplinary Case Conference - monthly
  6. Center All Staff Meeting - quarterly
  7. Health Services All Staff Meeting - every fifth Friday of the month
  8. Other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of relevance to LGBTQ people.
  • A passion for the Center's work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
  • Current license and degrees.
  • Licensed in the State of Texas.
  • Registered by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Furnishing license.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
