JOB TITLE: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for safe operation of mowers, pick-up trucks, trailers, etc need to facilitate the construction and maintenance of roads and right-of-ways.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Responsible for the safe operation of trucks, mowers and other light equipment on work sites.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of power tools and manual tools needed on work sites.
  • Responsible delivering materials to work sites.
  • Responsible for following safety rules on all work sites, especially flagging & traffic control.
  • Responsible for seeing that scheduled maintenance is performed on all equipment and vehicles operated.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in providing excellence in customer service to the citizens of Gordon County.
  • Skill in driving in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of attention to road conditions and surroundings.
  • Ability to maintain considerable dexterity in the control of truck/equipment for personal safety and in preventing damage to materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of all areas of Gordon County or willingness to become familiar.
  • Ability to read road maps.
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out instructions from manuals.
  • Knowledge of basic rules of road safety and any Gordon County policy regarding safety.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass substance abuse screening.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License.
  • Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  • Must be insurable under any County liability or motor vehicle liability insurance policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is a physically demanding position. The work for this position requires that the employee be exposed to a variety of settings and conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold or heat. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles including dust; and risk of electrical shock. The employee will be required to wear a dust abatement apparatus under certain conditions. Noise levels may vary at times, but are usually moderate; however the employee will be required to wear hearing protection under certain conditions. Frequent sitting and driving in truck cab or on equipment/mowers for long periods of time. Frequent mount and dismount from cab of truck or off of equipment/mowers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hand with dexterity; reach with hands and arms; pushing; pulling. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or work in areas where space is limited. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
