JOB SUMMARY
Material Handlers are responsible for efficiently and safely loading and unloading trucks and trailers at the warehouse using pallet jacks and forklifts. When unloading a truck or trailer they are responsible for accurately sorting, stocking, processing, or disposing of the product or material and helping to maintain the organization of the warehouse; this includes donated goods, recycled materials, salvage materials, garbage, and hazardous materials. This position requires the ability to be forklift certified and to safely operate, regularly clean, and help maintain the forklift. Material Handlers will also help maintain the cleanliness of the warehouses by completing cleaning tasks as assigned. This position may be responsible for the safe sorting and storing of all donated hazardous material at the Warehouse. Must adhere to all Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Coast Counties rules, policies, and safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Efficiently and safely load and unload trucks and trailers at the warehouses using pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Become forklift certified through Goodwill training.
  • Complete cleaning tasks as assigned; help maintain the warehouses as safe, clean workplaces.
  • Accurately sorts salvage materials into assigned containers.
  • Safely and correctly operate the cardboard and trash compactors.
  • Safely and correctly operate the textile baler.
  • Practice highest-quality customer service (this includes respectful treatment of all customers and staff).
  • Offer helpful, innovative suggestions to help improve processes within the department
  • Notify immediate supervisor of any problems or unusual situations including accidents, driving citations, suspended drivers’ licenses, etc.
  • Keep supervisor informed of issues and suggestions related to the job.
  • Prepare records and reports, as requested.
  • Informs supervisor of operation needs such as moving equipment, material handling dollies, pads, flats and trucks, as well as any maintenance needs and repairs.
  • May require hazardous material handling to include: Sort hazardous donations by chemical and disposal method, keep the hazardous storage area clean and organized, systematically dispose of materials as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB EXPECTATIONS

  • Notify immediate supervisor of any problems or unusual situations including accidents, driving citations, suspended drivers’ licenses, etc.
  • Maintain well-groomed appearance and acceptable dress in compliance with GILSCC’s dress guidelines. (See Handbook policy 172)

  • Strong knowledge of safe lifting techniques.
  • Uses correct lifting and material handling techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with all state safety guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all GILSCC’s policies, CARF standards, and safety and security regulations.
  • Reports for scheduled work regularly and on time. Notifies manager as soon as possible regarding the need and expected duration of any absence.
  • Must be able to follow written or verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to work all hours of operations and be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Must be able to read and write.
  • Must be able to function independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age; 21 years of age if driving will be part of the regular duties.
  • Must not present a direct threat to the safety and health of self, others or to property.
  • No record or disclosure of criminal conviction that indicates a tendency toward theft, violence, dishonesty, deceit, drug manufacture or sale, moral turpitude, or predatory behavior.
  • Must provide identification and eligibility to work in the United States of America.
  • Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug-screening test and subsequent drug screenings, as required.
  • Must exercise good judgment.
  • Be flexible in work assignment to accommodate changing production demands.
  • Must have sufficient command of the English language to communicate with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.

EXPERIENCE
Forklift experience desirable; must have the ability to become Goodwill forklift certified. For hazardous material handling: Hazardous material training desirable.

EDUCATION
No minimum education requirement.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
For hazardous material handling, must obtain HAZWOPER certification within 30 days of hire, be able to pass respirator fitness test upon hire and have a current, state issued driver’s license and insurable driving record. Must be able to become certified on all equipment (forklift, pallet jack, baler, compactor) necessary to perform your duties safely and efficiently. (Training and certifications provided by Goodwill training.)

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

  • Must be able to do heavy lifting, stand, walk, carry, push, stoop, bend, twist, crouch, grasp, kneel and climb.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Indoor and outdoor working conditions with exposure to all weather. Moderate adaptability required: Work environment is mostly hectic (fast paced) with irregular short deadlines and limited number of critical or unusual situations. May be exposed to dust if working in a warehouse setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
