GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF THE VALLEYS INC is Hiring a Maintenance Specialist Near Roanoke, VA

Summary: Under the supervision of the Facilities and Fleet Manager or designee the Maintenance Specialist is responsible for providing maintenance and repair of Goodwill owned and leased facilities for the safety and security of our employees, clients, and visitors.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide excellent customer service to employees, clients, visitors, and vendors.
  • Plans and schedules general maintenance and repairs for designated facilities, systems, or equipment as directed by supervisor.
  • Assist in obtaining quotes for various facility repair maintenance projects.
  • Assists as directed in monitoring and supervising the work of local subcontractors.
  • Responds to maintenance and mechanical emergencies as needed and requested.
  • Performs repair and maintenance of major systems and equipment, including, but not limited to: HVAC, utilities, balers, compactors, forklifts, and production equipment.
  • Performs electrical repairs and installations according to proper electrical code. Serves as organization representative pertaining to current and proposed electrical systems, repair, and upgrades with external vendors.
  • Insures proper grounds care and maintenance at each facility for professional appearance and presentation.
  • Responsible for prompt and accurate record keeping and reporting. Monitors email for instruction from supervisor, responding promptly to maintenance request and closing out requests in LandPort software once completed.
  • Adheres to federal, state, and local laws and regulations that apply to non-profit organizations as they apply to day-to-day operations.
  • Adheres to agency safety policies and procedures.
  • Attends conferences, seminars, and meetings to increase general knowledge and personal growth as requested by supervisor.
  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested for successful completion of the mission of GIV.
  • Must be willing and able to work additional hours, if necessary, to accomplish the responsibilities of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of five years facility maintenance experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of building maintenance and repair practices, including effective safety practices, standards, and techniques pertaining to facility maintenance operations. Considerable knowledge of plumbing systems required.
  • Current Virginia Master Electrician and Master HVAC Certification.
  • Ability to develop and adhere to schedules; concurrently manage a wide variety of projects; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables and situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to provide proof of insurance is required to drive personal vehicle on company business. Additionally, an acceptable motor vehicle record based on Goodwill guidelines is required to drive a company vehicle.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Training and Experience:

Must be able to successfully complete the following Goodwill training within the required period of time upon employment:

  • Orientation (Objectives and philosophies of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys)
  • Employee Compliance Update (Confidentiality practices)
  • Applicable Personnel Policies
  • Emergency Preparedness Procedures
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Training (Infection Control Practices and Measures)
  • EEO and Harassment

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for extended periods of time, with periods walking and sitting. Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move over 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally work in wet and humid conditions. Will be exposed to outdoor weather, including extreme cold and heat. Will work near moving mechanical parts frequently. Will periodically work in high, precarious places. Will work near fumes and airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals infrequently.
  • There may be a risk of electrical shock. Will not work with explosives, nor have a risk of radiation. Some work with mechanical and electrical equipment may cause occasional vibration.
