 Job Description

Job Title: Donation Attendant (Multi-Location)

Division: Retail Operations

Department: Donations

Reports To: Retail Store Manager and/or Donation Attendant Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reviewed By: Human Resources

SUMMARY

Represents Goodwill at donation receiving sites, including Goodwill stores, Attended Donation Centers (ADCs) and community donation events. Assists donors with acceptance of donations and provision of a donation receipt. Educates donors on acceptable donations and on the Company’s mission. Organizes and consolidates donated goods to facilitate pick-ups and store production processes. Sorts, inspects, hangs and/or otherwise prepares donated goods for the sales floor at a Goodwill Store. Maintains cleanliness of donation area, and assists in loading and unloading of the Company truck. Assist in retail store duties. Availability to work on the weekends and holidays is an essential function of this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. 

  • Greets donors in a friendly, courteous and timely manner. 
  • Assists donors with the unloading of donations, provides a donation receipt, and thanks all donors for supporting Goodwill.
  • Directs donor vehicular traffic when necessary such that flow of traffic is not obstructed by donors’ parked vehicles. 
  • Assists in donation tracking and record keeping including maintaining an accurate daily count of donors and donations.
  • Helps donors identify acceptable and unacceptable donation items, and explain to donors why an item may be unacceptable.
  • Serves as company ambassador and explains the Goodwill Mission in the community.
  • Provides general information about Goodwill’s Services and Programs and a contact number where additional information can be obtained.
  • Responsible for regular and situational communication with the Retail Store Manager and/or Donation Attendant Supervisor.
  • Adheres to company uniform and appearance standards and maintains a professional image at all times.
  • Performs duties in a safe and responsible manner, complies with safety standards and follows operating procedures when utilizing equipment, tools & machinery. 
  • Adheres to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

At Community Donation Events

At community donation events, sets-up and takes down donation receiving station.

At ADCs

Organizes and consolidates donated goods into bags and boxes to facilitate pick-ups, ensuring that breakable items are packed in a way that minimizes damage from transportation.

Submits tracking and count data on a timely basis.

Maintains a clean, well-organized ADC (interior and surrounding area), including bagging all trash items in a timely manner for pick-up.

Reports any irregular activity and dumping activity to Retail Store Manager.

Assists Transportation in the loading of trucks, ensuring that no donations or trash are left behind in and around the ADC.

At Stores

Provides assistance to the Transportation Department to accomplish and complete tasks assigned. Assists with lift gate operations on the truck(s) to upload and download donated goods.

Loads and unloads vehicles by hand or by use of hand truck or dolly. Pads, stacks, and secures items in position on truck to prevent damage during shipment.

Separates items by category and places goods into applicable sorting bins/work stations and rolls bins to appropriate sorting station.

Scans non-textile merchandise to detect defects, such as chips, breakage, merchandise damage, missing components, stains, etc. Cleans, wipes or dusts merchandise to prepare it for pricing and placement on the sales floor.

Tests electrical items by plugging the merchandise into the electrical test station, following all safety and testing procedures.

Assists in production duties as directed by the Retail Store Manager. During these periods of time, the Production Worker job description(s), duties and responsibilities are applicable.

Keeps accurate records of applicable production work and number of items processed through the work station and/or onto the sales floor.

Watches for illegal or inappropriate customer, donor, or employee activity and possible theft and alerts the Retail Store Manager and/or the Assistant Store Manager.

Assists with all necessary, and/or assigned cleaning duties.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

There are no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Prior experience in customer service preferred. Experience working independently and good communication skills to be able to explain company mission and provide general information about Goodwill’s Services and Programs.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to donors and other individuals in the community requesting information about Goodwill.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Personal Protective Equipment: Back belts can be made available as this position will require regular lifting. Requests to be made to the Supervisor.

Employee Responsibility for Safety:

4. I will use proper personal equipment when required.

5. I will ask questions if uncertain about any issue.

7. I will immediately report all injuries and/or unsafe conditions to my manager/supervisor, no matter how trivial it may be.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable donation items.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Goodwill retail stores, ADCs, and community donation events are located at various locations throughout the island of Oahu. Ability to work at various donation receiving locations is required. Operations are seven days per week, including weekends and holidays. Ability to be available to work as needed is required. Assignments to ADC and store sites are typically based on geographic proximity to each other.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally maneuver wheeled containers weighing up to 300 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

UNIFORM STANDARD & AGREEMENT:

Attendant will be provided a uniform and name tag to be worn during work hours. Upon resignation or termination of employment, Attendant will be required to return any/all uniform/s and name tag/s. The following uniform items will be issued:

  1. Full time employees (3)-GOW Navy Blue T-Shirt
  2. Part time employees (2) GOW Navy BlueT-Shirt

2. (1)-Name Tag

Attendants must provide their own pants/jeans/knee length khakis, covered shoes and socks.

Skirts are not allowed due to physical demands of the job, types of tasks and work environment.

Regular attendance is a requirement of this position. At ADCs, work hours are 9:30 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Friday; 8:30 am – 5 pm, Saturday - Sunday. At Stores, work hours are between 8:30 am-7:30 pm every day. All work days include holidays. Work hours are subject to change to meet the needs of a retail operation.
