Description

Position Summary:

The Academic Instructor is responsible for literacy and numeracy skill building, facilitating classroom learning, 1:1 academic coaching, college readiness training, curriculum development and evaluation and reporting of student progress. The Academic Instructor will maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment and provide guidance and support to students resulting in optimal academic and employment outcomes for individuals served.

Day in the life: In a typical day, a Academic Instructor can expect to...

  • Instruction: Provide academic instruction to students with varying academic levels while integrating General Education Degree (GED) skills, reading and math skills, social justice subjects, and community and world news. This is done using a variety of instruction methods and resources.
  • Curriculum Development: Design and develop GED curriculum content, lesson plans, assessments, and training materials, grounded in culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Individualized Academic Services: Ensure students receive individualized academic planning, goal setting, and feedback on progress toward goals.
  • Documentation: Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation of student progress.

  • Typical starting pay range: $58,874 - $66,560

About You:

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong commitment in helping young people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds reorient their lives, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in their community
  • Adaptive, flexible, and sensitive to the learning attitudes and needs of young adults
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration with others and team teaching
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong organization skills, ability in multi-tasking to meet deadlines
  • Independent decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of data privacy requirements and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software and the ability to accurately enter data into computer-based systems
  • Must have a valid driver's license, pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check, and carry valid automobile insurance that meets GESMN's requirements for individuals who transport program participants.

Prior Experience & Education:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in education or related field, or equivalent experience teaching basic literacy and numeracy skills to young adults; may include General Education Development (GED) and/or other High School Equivalency diploma instruction as noted:
    • With bachelor's degree: Minimum of 2 years experience
    • With associate degree: Minimum of 3 years experience
    • Without degree: Minimum of 5 years experience
  • Familiarity with the TABE, CASAS, and other standardized assessments preferred.
  • Experience in creative curriculum planning and development preferred.
