SUMMARY

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Safely operate our vessels and buses in accordance with all relevant regulations and company policies
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle's mechanical integrity and safety standards.
  • Plans and conducts safety drills and training of crew in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and policy; ensures crew proficiency in performance of duties.
  • Navigate through diverse environments, including urban streets and water bodies, while adhering to designated routes and schedules.
  • Maintains high standards of excellence in passenger services and crew motivation to perform their duties with enthusiasm and energy.
  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting passengers with boarding, disembarking, and addressing inquiries or concerns courteously and professionally.
  • Deliver engaging and informative commentary about points of interest along the route, enhancing the passenger experience with entertaining anecdotes and historical facts.
  • Maintain a welcoming and hospitable environment on board, fostering a positive and memorable journey for passengers of all ages.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures and protocols, including evacuation drills and response to adverse weather conditions or mechanical issues.
  • Monitor weather forecasts and waterway conditions to assess potential risks and make informed decisions regarding route adjustments or cancellations when necessary.
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety for passengers and crew members at all times, prioritizing their well-being above all other considerations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs, such as checking fluid levels, inspecting tires, and troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff and external service providers to address any issues requiring specialized expertise or equipment, ensuring the continued reliability and performance of the vehicle.
Qualifications

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations, seamanship, and maritime safety procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics of marine machinery, equipment and systems, their functional relationships, installation and repair procedures, methods and trade practices, and the unique environmental conditions under which work is performed aboard marine craft.
  • Ability to safely drive a passenger bus in all types of weather, road conditions, and in darkness.
  • Excellent navigational and ship handling skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Skill in ship handling, navigation methods and techniques, and the operation of marine navigational computer software, marine radar, depth sounder and chart plotter equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to install tire chains.
  • Ability to supervise effectively, builds teamwork, and maintains crew morale.
  • Ability to maintain or direct the maintenance of the vessel, engines and auxiliary equipment in a well-organized and clear condition.
  • Ability to prepare clear and complete logs/reports/records, communicate effectively and carryout and deliver oral and written instructions; use personal computer.
  • Ability to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to overnight at the mine during when weather conditions are too rough to operate.
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance on a daily basis.
  • Ability to meet time and attendance requirements.
  • Ability to handle stress under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend resolutions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work and ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of Captain or First Mate experience in a vessel rated 50 tons or more, with operational experience both day and night in Southeast Alaska waters.
  • S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master's License
  • Current CPR and first aid certificates
  • Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class B) with passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Ability to successfully pass drug testing and background check.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • Any additional education or related training preferred.
  • Mechanical skills and understanding of marine maintenance practices.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with all aspects of passenger transportation.
