Glyphic Biotechnologies is Hiring a Vice President, Research and Development Near Berkeley, CA

VP, R&D // Full-time, exempt, on-site (Berkeley, CA)

At Glyphic Biotechnologies, we plan to create the protein revolution for which scientists and researchers have been waiting. We are developing a massively parallel, single-molecule protein sequencing platform that will transform proteomics and usher in a new era of insights into human biology and disease. To date, we have raised >$20M from venture partners and non-dilutive grant funding to achieve our vision of next generation protein sequencing.

What we’re looking for in you

Glyphic Bio seeks a Vice President, R&D to drive research ready for product integration. The VP will be a key member of the leadership team and be responsible for setting and executing our R&D goals and timelines to meet company objectives. The candidate must have a strong background in R&D for life science analytical systems that encompasses instruments, consumables, assays, software, and system integration, and preferably with previous experience in proteomics. The ideal candidate will have led R&D for several commercially successful life science instruments. This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and the Chief Executive Officer and works closely with company leadership across functions.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading and managing R&D teams to drive product development and integration, including setting goals, timelines, and strategies.

  • Working closely with Product Development, oversee research and development in support of the company's protein sequencing platform.

  • Working closely with the CTO and CEO, align R&D with the company's overall objectives and roadmap.

  • Implementing robust project management frameworks and tools to effectively organize projects, delegate tasks, and track project success.

  • Working with People Operations to build an exceptional R&D team and culture, recruiting and retain top talent and foster cross-functional collaboration.

  • Ensuring the R&D team follows quality management best practices.

  • Driving proteomics-focused innovation to advance the company's protein sequencing technology.

  • Propose and overseeing the R&D budget, resources, and headcount.

  • Representing R&D priorities and progress to executives, the board, and other stakeholders.

  • Providing clear technical documentation and reports to various audiences on R&D initiatives.

  • Maintaining deep expertise in proteomics, biotech R&D, and analytical instrumentation.

  • Publishing research results, attending conferences, and building the company's reputation in the proteomics community.

Required Competencies

  • Technical degree in chemistry, biology, bioengineering or other life science disciplines. An advanced degree in chemistry or molecular biology is strongly preferred.

  • 12 years of experience in life science R&D.

  • Previously involved in the development of a robust, high-quality instrument-based platform for life sciences that has achieved commercial success.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build and lead an R&D team for a life sciences platform developer.

  • Experience working with -omics platforms.

  • Previously implemented R&D project management tools from scratch, bringing R&D infrastructure “from zero to one”.

  • Ability to implement a quality management system to support the development of a life sciences instrument-based platform

  • Exceptional organization skills, with experience rolling out project management tools with high percentage stakeholder participation.

  • Ability to manage diverse teams, ensuring that stakeholders understand how their work relates to the team mission.

  • Ability to “manage sideways”, working effectively and energetically with other company leaders.

  • Expert written and verbal communication skills.

  • Comfortable using electronic laboratory notebooks (e.g., LabGuru, Benchling).

  • Comfortable using procurement platforms (e.g., Prendio, Coupa).

  • Strong technological competence, with a willingness to adopt new tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comfortable with common workplace productivity tools (e.g., Slack, Notion, Miro, AirTable).
