POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for working with the Glass Roots Construction (GRC) President and Chief Operating Officer to stand up GRC’s construction capability. The company will initially be focused on construction projects in the Arcata/Redding, CA area, but may expand to work in other geographies over time. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of building and leading underground & aerial utility construction teams, with a focus on fiber optic networks. This position will have supervisory responsibility for most aspects of GRC’s construction operations in the Northern California market, including hiring, training, equipment & material procurement, health & safety, crew production and general day-to-day operations. Reports to Glass Roots Construction President.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities include:

• Supervisory responsibility and leadership of construction crews, with a focus on cost management, production and safety.
• Hire & train construction crews and support staff consistent with project workload
• Provide detailed production forecast and updates to GRC/Vero project management team
• Maintain accurate production statuses and statistics in Vero’s proprietary project management platform
• Ensure compliance with all environmental, cultural, biological and permit requirements
• Manage materials procurement & inventory
• Develop cost-effective solutions for traffic control, trenching, hard surface restoration, hazmat removal, and other outsourced needs
• Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for the construction business
• Oversee health & safety programs, ensuring compliance with state/local/DOT/OSHA reqs.
• Preventive and emergency maintenance of Vero’s network assets in the Arcata/Eureka area, including utility locates, route drives, damage prevention and repairs
• Requires in-market presence of at least 75% of work days

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• 5 years’ experience managing underground fiber optic construction crews (aerial experience is a plus)
• 3 years’ management experience in fiber optic construction
• Proven ability to develop and meet production forecasts for complex underground construction projects
• Thorough understanding of OSP construction techniques & standards
• Ability to manage and command the respect of field construction crews
• Ability to work constructively with permitting agencies, DOT/OSHA inspectors and other stakeholders
