Job Description:
Join Girlstart's efforts to educate and empower girls! Girlstart’s Summer Counselors (called STEM CREW --Creative, Resourceful, Empowered Workforce) work directly with rising 4th-6th girls leading hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities at weekly day camps. Improve your classroom management skills (including problem solving, critical thinking, & decision-making), teaching style (communication & presentation skills), leadership abilities, be part of a diverse team, and gain curriculum-writing experience. STEM CREW counselors serve as positive and fun role models for the girls!

Successful STEM CREW need to be comfortable traveling to different camp sites in Milpitas and Sunnyvale each week, ready to work hard and most importantly, understand that Girlstart can't control everything going into a new environment so they need to be flexible. Additionally, Girlstart relies on this team of 4 STEM CREW to be the face of our organization and we need to know and trust that the team can make the best decisions based on the situation at hand.
Responsibilities:
Lead camp curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (previous STEM experience not required, curriculum and materials provided by Girlstart)
Implement and run daily camp activities
Learn and implement the Girlstart method within all program activities
Modify activities as needed accommodate any unique camp scenarios
Be prepared to lead camp activities including icebreakers, organizing materials, practicing technology, etc.
Facilitate classroom management techniques
Act as a positive role model for girls
Other duties as needed
Qualifications:
Teacher certification preferred or related experience in youth programming
Positive, friendly, flexible and outgoing
Self-motivated with the ability to work as a team player and foster cooperative work
Reliable, dependable, and timely
Effective organization skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
Excellent communication skills
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a commitment to the mission of Girlstart
Experience working at summer camps and/or out of school time programming
Knowledge of educational learning standards and best practices for classroom management
Comfortable presenting to a group of youth
All STEM CREW Counselors Must:
Attend or view mandatory training (June 10-14 tentatively)
Work the complete duration of the camps ideal schedule approximately 7:45am-5:00pm (hours vary from camp to camp and exceptions can be discussed)
Pass a background and fingerprint check, be or become First Aid/CPR certified, and obtain a Sexual Abuse Awarenesss certificate (Girlstart will provide additional information upon hire)
Abide by CA requirements to work with youth

Hourly rate: $22-$25/hour, depending on experience/certifications

Founded in 1997, Girlstart is one of the few non-profit, community-based informal education programs in the nation specifically dedicated to empowering and equipping K-12 girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We accomplish this by developing innovative models and processes for teaching STEM and delivering STEM and STEM integrated education programs.
