We have an immediate need for a full-time, exempt Chief Operating Officer. The Chief Operating Officer oversees Girls Inc. of Boston and Lynn’s operational functions to ensure seamless implementation of programs and services, financial sustainability, and organizational growth. The Chief Operating Officer directs the development and implementation of operational plans for an effective infrastructure of systems, procedures, policies, and employees to achieve objectives and goals. The salary range for this hybrid position is $90,000 - $105,000, commensurate with experience. As a full-time role, the Chief Operating Officer is eligible to participate in the Girls Inc. benefits program.

POSITION OVERVIEW (What we’re looking for)

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Operating Officer is instrumental in coordinating and advancing the organization’s strategic and operational plans to fulfill the mission. The Chief Operating Officer bears the responsibility of cohesively integrating the organization’s strategic vision into daily operational practices. As a member of Girls, Inc. of Boston and Lynn’s leadership team, the Chief Operating Officer collaborates closely with the CEO and other senior leadership members to develop and execute strategic plans, manage resources effectively, and drive operational excellence. This role leads the strategic leadership and direction of all operational functions, including finance, human resources, information technology (IT), and administration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES (What you'll be achieving)

At a minimum, the Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for successfully carrying out the following essential functions and duties:

Operations

  • Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and systems to optimize efficiency and effectiveness across the organization.
  • Monitor and evaluate operational performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and drive continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Design and execute plans for operational improvements to meet growth objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, rules, regulations, and laws across the organization.
  • Oversee internal and external processes while promoting operational efficiency.
  • Provide clear and adequate information flow throughout the organization.
  • Manage the organization’s employee health & wellness benefits programs, business insurance plans (liability, workers’ compensation, etc.), annual tax-exempt reporting, and other required business compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with other leadership team members to create, implement, and monitor contracts, including contractual agreements with schools, community organizations, corporate vendors, etc.
  • Serve as the organizational liaison to vendors, consultants, community partners, etc.

Financial & Accounting Management

  • Supervise the Finance team members, ensuring all financial and accounting objectives are met.
  • Manage the organization’s annual budget and financial plans.
  • Oversee the organization’s financial resources, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget and financial goals.
  • Prepare, submit, and present regular reporting to the CEO and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards, and funding requirements.

Human Resources Management

  • Lead the human resources function, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, professional development, and employee relations.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement human capital policies and procedures.
  • Promote a positive organizational culture that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that empowers staff to achieve their full potential.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.
  • Oversee all human resource reporting and documentation is maintained in compliance with funders’ requirements and state and federal regulations.

Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Collaborate with the CEO and other senior leadership members to develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives that advance the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Monitor progress towards strategic goals and objectives, making adjustments as directed by the CEO to ensure successful execution.
  • Identify emerging opportunities, challenges, and risks and provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Assist the CEO with ensuring highly productive, day-to-day administration of the organization.
  • Contribute to the creation and stewardship of the organization’s fundraising culture.
  • Support program development in compliance, assessment, and growth objectives.
  • Oversee the reporting and evaluation of all programs and ensure the results are shared.
  • Embrace and support the organization’s mission, demonstrating commitment to elevating mission effectiveness and continuous improvement.
  • Represent the affiliate organization with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to excellence at all times.
  • Participate in goal-setting initiatives for program objectives, strategies, and tactics.

Technology & Facilities Oversight

  • Oversee the operational effectiveness of systems that support the organizational infrastructure.
  • Ensure sufficient continuity of operations so that systems and staff perform efficiently and effectively.
  • Act as the final authority on system changes and implementations.
  • Assist the Program Director with ensuring compliance with national standards.
  • Ensure equipment and facilities are maintained in good condition.
  • Approve facility-use agreements and all major equipment and maintenance expenditures according to organizational policies.

Other Related Affiliate Activities

  • Participate in community coalitions and committees as appropriate.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (What you’ll bring along)

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in nonprofit management, business, public administration, or another related field.

Experience: Minimum of five years of related experience, including leadership roles in operations, project management, human resources, or a related field. Preference may be given to prior experience in leading or supporting youth development, youth-serving, elementary school, or out-of-school time programs.

  • Knowledgeable about core programs and desired outcomes.
  • Ability to lead staff in achieving goals through excellent employee coaching skills.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills with a proven track record of achieving results.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaborate as a team member.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, organizing, and executing organization-wide strategies.
  • Attention to detail to drive complex projects and initiatives to completion.
  • Capability to work effectively in a hybrid work setting between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on Mondays – Fridays; some evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other applications to conduct day-to-day administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Prior hands-on experience and proficiency in Sage accounting software.
