Girl Scouts of Northern California is Hiring a Lifeguard - Day Camp (Seasonal) Near Fairfax, CA

Location(s): 

  • Marin Day Camp at Arequipa

Approximate Dates:

  • Session I: June 17-21, 2024
  • Session II: June 24-28, 2024
  • Session III: July 8-12, 2024
  • Session IV: July 15-19, 2024
  • Session V: July 1-3, 2024 (limited hours on these days)

Hours are from 9:30am-3:00pm Monday-Wednesday and 9:30am-5:00pm Thursdays. 

Job Description: 

A Lifeguard is responsible for providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s aquatics activities. Assist with the management of the physical operation of the aquatics facilities and equipment. Promote high standards in all aspects of the camp program. Serve as a role model to campers and staff by your actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. 
 Essential Duties:

  1. Supervise and guard all aquatics activities.
    1. Provide surveillance during aquatic activities to help prevent and to manage injuries. 
    2. Perform rescues as needed. 
    3. Perform First Aid and CPR and other emergency management skills as needed. 
    4. Understand and implement appropriate response to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the aquatics area. 
    5. Enforce aquatic safety procedures for both staff and campers. 
    6. Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers and staff. 
    7. Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSNorCal and GSUSA regarding aquatics programs are being followed. 
    8. Assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the pool. 
  2. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the aquatics program area.
    1. Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. 
    2. Clean pool area daily keeping it free of hazards and debris. 
    3. Assist in the set-up of aquatic / pool areas. 
  3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    1. Follow all health and safety protocols, which may include mask-wearing, social distancing, frequent handwashing, Covid-testing, and disinfection of high-touch areas as outlined during staff orientation. 
    2. Be alert to campers needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with health staff and/or Camp Director when appropriate. 
    3. Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly.
    4. Report accidents, incidents, and illnesses promptly. 
    5. Supervise area housekeeping and sanitation. See that supplies are available and that equipment is used properly. 
    6. Submit a Covid-19 vaccination record, or regular Covid-19 testing results.
  4. Provide superior client service to all campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers and vendors.
    1. Identify client needs, make suggestions, initiate and follow through with appropriate action. 
    2. Participate as a member of the camp team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
    3. Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the pool. 
    4. Participate in staff meetings. 
  5. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and 
    1. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. 
    2. Adhere to the Camp Culture Code. 
  6. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR PR.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (or equivalent).
  • Must submit health history record and examination record dated within one year on first day of work.
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Support the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Organization

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge and experience with Girl Scout day camp program preferred
  • Training and experience in leading aquatics activities.
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate and work with girls grades K-12 and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to hazards.
  • Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to carry and load luggage, tables, chairs, and other program equipment.
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Ability to work irregular hours. 
  • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, mice, raccoons, and other wildlife common to the area.
