Welcome to an exciting opportunity as the Camp and Outdoor Program Director! In this role, you will create, design, and execute programs that cater to the evolving needs of our girl members. Your primary focus will be on crafting engaging experiences related to travel, summer camps (both overnight and day camps), outdoor adventures, and comprehensive training.

Please Note: This position requires flexibility in working hours, including nights and weekends, and will not adhere to a standard Monday - Friday 9-5 schedule.

As the Camp and Outdoor Program Director, you will be based in North Carolina during the non-summer season (September to May) and reside on one of our camp properties throughout the summer months (June to August). Note this position would need to be open to all GSNCCP Camp Locations Camp Mary Atkinson Johnston County NC Camp Hardee Beaufort County NC Camp Graham Vance County NC

Day In the Life:

  • Plans develops, manages, and evaluates new and existing Girl Scout resident camps, day camps, and outdoor activities.
  • Works in collaboration with the program team and volunteers as applicable to provide and support well-rounded, relevant, and accessible program opportunities, training, resources, and support to our members in all 41 counties.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, manages and evaluates camp staff based on the established GSUSA, Council, and ACA guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains a risk management plan for all program operations. Ensures compliance with all safety standards and policies in accordance with GSUSA, ACA, and state and local laws and health regulations.
  • Partners with property staff to identify and forecast camp needs, strategic priorities, and improvements in conjunction with ensuring maintenance, replacement, and acquisition of program equipment to support programs at camp.
  • Demonstrates sound fiduciary oversight and prepares and manages budgets (including grant programs). Ensures that programs and camps are cost-effective and provides regular budget and forecasting reports.
  • Provides leadership opportunities for older girls, including providing oversight and direction for girls to serve on committees and task groups or participate in leadership training.
  • Provides excellent customer service by demonstrating empathy and exercising innovative problem-solving. Ensures a consistent and timely communication system is in place to meet the needs of customers, volunteers, program partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Maximizes camp attendance through retention and acquisition efforts, including developing and marketing an engaging, relevant resident camp program.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in recreational program planning and implementation or other related fields. A Bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field will also be considered.
  • Full-time working Camp experience in a leadership role.
  • Able to work independently with little supervision. Supervisory experience is required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends). 
  • Must be able to live on camp property during the camp season (May - August). 
  • Must be able to supervise, communicate, train, and evaluate the work of volunteers and staff.
  • Proven experience with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with volunteers and staff.
  • Knowledge and experience of outdoor camping skills.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; must be detail-oriented.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs.
  • This position requires driving a council vehicle or a personal vehicle; therefore, the individual must complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license, and self-report any vehicle violations.
  • Must be able to lift or move a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors as needed, and traveling to remote locations may be required to perform the duties of this position.
  • Actively support and promote the Council’s and GSUSA’s commitments to diversity and inclusion.
  • Be willing to obtain a GSUSA membership ($25 annually) upon employment.
