Description

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Certified Nursing Assistant or Nursing Assistant is a non-professional staff member who performs duties to obtain clinical information/data, clinical CLIA waved lab testing, and testing on medical equipment, necessary for the medical office visit. This assistance is under supervision of the Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse, and the Physician/APN/PA.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Greets patients appropriately and escorts to exam rooms; performs documents and reports vital signs, records height and weight.
 
2. Obtain and record patient history and current complaint(s).

3. In the INTAKE Template of the E.H.R. – The C.N.A. maintains/reviews the patient medical history from their record, including allergies and medications, and enters information verified into the record. NOTE: Any medications the patient is currently taking that are not already listed in the Medication History List, only the nurse/APN/PA or physician will enter those medications into the Medication Module- The C.N.A./N.A. cannot add medications into the Medication Module.

4. Under the direction and guidance of the Physician/APN/PA/Nurse, may provide age specific education/information to patient and family members.

5. Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas.

6. Prepare patient for and assist with routine and specialty examinations.

7. Prepare patient for and assist with procedures, treatments and minor office surgeries, excluding preparation and administration of medication.

8. Answers phone calls, documents patient message and forwards information to nurse, APN, PA, Physician. Does not provide medical advice or recommend treatment.

9. Sends patients reminders for follow up, if applicable.

10. Make referrals by phone to area physician offices and hospitals for tests and consults. 

11. Perform specimen collections: venipuncture, capillary puncture, obtains specimens for microbiological testing.

12. Instruct patients in the collection of clean-catch, mid-stream urine specimen and in the collection of a fecal specimen.

13. Collect specimens for DOT and Bus Driver physicals. 

14. Perform electrocardiography as ordered by Physician, APN, PA.

15. Perform respiratory testing, such as PFT/Pulse Oximetry, as ordered by Physician, APN, PA.

16. Perform venipunctures, drug screens, CLIA waved tests, and other medical equipment testing, as evidence of competency allows, as ordered by the Physician/Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant

17. Document the CLIA waived tests you perform into the CLIA logs. 

18. Obtain prior authorization(s) for procedures and testing, if applicable.

19. Follows Infection Control fundamentals r/t: Standard Precautions, good hand washing, disposal of bio hazardous materials, sterile or aseptic technique, disinfection of instruments/equipment, and preparation for autoclaving.

20. Working knowledge and use of computer applications.

21. Scans document into appropriate category of EMR system after completing competency.

22. Maintains and completes medical records by documenting patient activities during visit.

23. Maintains patient confidence and keeps patient care information confidential.

24. Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory bodies.

25. Maintains and restocks exam rooms with needed supplies.

26. Monitors supplies, except medications, for outdating and disposes of properly.

27. Does not have access to medication/vaccine cabinets or refrigerators. 

28. Orders supplies, if applicable.

Qualifications


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Basic lifting/bending: Boxes, medical equipment, patient care.

2. Basic twisting, turning: During above functions.

3. Basic vigorous walking: Daily functions of transferring patients to care area during a fast paced, busy clinic.

4. Basic prolonged standing: During daily functions at nursing workstations.

5. Visual acuity to observe patients for assessment and data collection, to use manual documentation tools.

6. Auditory acuity to hear patient’s verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.

7. Emotional stability conductive to dealing with patients, and family members.

8. Strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

• Floor to waist - 40 pounds
• 14” to waist - 50 pounds
• Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
• Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
• Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
• Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
• Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to Office Manager.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Must be competencied by laboratory supervisor/designee for all CLIA
waved testing, venipuncture, drug screens, and medical equipment testing and oriented by RN/LPN according to any and all job skills required to perform said duties, in the clinic environment.

2. Current BLS certification or will achieve within six months of hire.

3. Must be able to follow directions and have a working knowledge of computer applications.

4. If certified, maintains certification in Department of Transportation (DOT) and non-DOT drug screening procedures.

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL

Category 1 – Maximal Risk – this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, and the like.

2. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
