GENERAL SUMMARY

Reports to the Director of Elite Sport and Fitness. Acts as a community liaison between area schools and athletic organizations, and GAHHS. Promotes athletic training services to health care providers and community members. Oversees the growth, development, and coordination of the athletic training program. Has a clinical reporting relationship with the Director of Elite Sport and Fitness. Evaluates and provides care to sports medicine patients with dysfunction in any of the following systems: musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary. Provides preventive care, emergency care, and treatment of those individuals participating in the sporting events being covered by the ATC. Communicates effectively with the Director, fellow ATC’s, school officials, and student athletes.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Coordinates athletic training coverage to all schools and athletic organizations working with GAHHS.
2. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the healthcare environment and sports medicine by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature and attending related conferences and in-services.

3. Ensures that all new athletic training staff receives a thorough orientation to the department and organization. Ensures staff remains current on all training required by regulatory agencies.
4. Maintains effective communication with physicians regarding coordination of services, new services, and clinical offerings potentially needing development.

5. Maintains the expectation among the athletic training staff for excellent customer service.

6. With the help of the Director of Elite Sport and Fitness, ensures adequate and appropriate staffing. Participates in the development of strategies to recruit and retain highly qualified individuals.

7. Participates in organizational committees. Encourages athletic training staff involvement as appropriate.

8. Organizes and leads bi-monthly program meetings. Attends all facility and department required educational sessions.

9. Maintains clinical skills needed to provide effective and efficient patient care. Evaluates patient’s physical, cognitive, and functional status, using standardized tests and measures. Incorporates pertinent medical information into the evaluation. Age specific, language and cultural needs are incorporated into the individualized treatment plan.

10. Complies with department documentation policy. Critical elements in
documentation are thoroughness, timeliness, and legibility.

11. Completes all competency/ skills assessment requirements.

12. Complies with dress code.

14. Complies with all issues related patient privacy.
15. Orders and bills for athletic training supplies to the participating school and youth football participating teams
16. Assists in keeping work area clean, sanitary and orderly.

17. Supports the Hospital’s and department’s performance improvement efforts designed to enhance patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the Hospital’s human, capital, and physical resources. Assists Director of Elite Sport and Fitness in completing the 6 months reviews for new ATC’s.

18. Complies with the organizational attendance policy and use of the electronic timekeeping system.

19. Assists Director with staff evaluations, competencies, and documentation
20. Will manage hours and any overtime will be preapproved by the Director.

21. Completes other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must have the physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks

  • Floor to waist - 50 pounds
  • 14” to waist - 50 pounds
  • Waist to shoulder - 35 pounds
  • Shoulder to overhead - 20 pounds
  • Carry 45 pounds for 30 feet
  • Push 50 pounds/force for 30 feet
  • Pull 50 pounds/force for 30 feet

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

1. Reports to the hospital Director of Elite Sport and Fitness.
2. Maintains communication with Director of Elite Sport and Fitness regarding the program.

3. Oversees the work of the ATC’s.

4. May assist in the clinical instruction of Athletic Trainers.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the ages of the patients served in the various settings of the care continuum. This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of the patient population served.

2. Current Illinois state licensure as an Athletic Trainer or license pending as such.

3. Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

4. Emotional stability conducive to dealing with moderately stressful situations, and effective working relationships with customers, peers, department and organizational leadership, physicians and other health care providers.

5. Complete continued education as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations. If an ATC, must complete the education necessary to maintain “ATC” credentials through the National Athletic Trainers’ Associations Board of Certification.

6. Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word, keyboard and mouse.

CATEGORY 1 - MAXIMAL RISK

The job exposes the clinician to potential blood, body fluids or tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that the clinician get the Hepatitis B vaccine.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to environmental temperature, dust, dirt, and noise.

2. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious disease or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.

3. Works in outdoor environment where there is exposure to weather conditions, temperature extreme, dust, dirt, and noise.
