Project/Unit Description

The Software Engineer position in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will support multiple research products and projects in concert with development teams who are building complex, multi-faceted embedded and electronic systems. AES predominantly focuses on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C , C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations
Additional Responsibilities
  • Software development and use of software applications in support of cloud-based applications
  • Software development and use of software applications in support of data analysis and visualization products
  • Research and development of Agile and DevSecOps processes, tools, and applications for fighter aircraft
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with programming languages and web-based frameworks (e.g. Python, C/C , C#, Java, JavaScript, React, Node, etc.)
  • Experience with software version control tools and best practices (e.g. Git)
  • Experience developing on/for Windows and Linux operating systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Familiarity with software development and collaboration tools such as GitLab and Atlassian
  • Experience with modern web technology stacks such as MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, and Node JS)
  • Familiarity with automated web testing frameworks such as Jest or Cypress
  • Experience delivering web applications utilizing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
