Project/Unit Description

GTRI's Signals and Systems Division (SASD) in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) seeks qualified candidates for the position of a Software Architect within the Operational Capabilities Branch (OCB). This Research Faculty position involves using computer science and software architecting to develop modeling and simulation environments and analysis techniques to solve challenging real-world problems related to national defense.
SASD consists of a staff of research professionals engaged in a portfolio of research related to next-generation aerospace technology analysis and innovation, including RF/EO/IR sensor physics, signal processing algorithms and techniques, EM maneuver warfare, effects-based modeling and simulation, verification and validation, advanced threat analysis, and operations research/developmental planning. ACL develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL's research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.
The Software Architect will collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team inclusively composed of software engineers, modeling and simulation engineers, and model-based systems engineers to architect complex analysis frameworks. They will leverage their knowledge of high-performance computing, DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, agile development, and configuration management to take on lead roles of small teams of engineers. The successful candidate will manage projects and technical subtasks to meet team goals, working with sponsors, engineers, and GTRI management. They will also participate in sponsor engagement efforts to identify potential opportunities, develop proposals, and manage business lines.

Job Purpose

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot systems as required, then perform or detail required resolutions
  • Perform comparative analysis to similar systems, assessing system strengths and weaknesses
  • Research system theory and design concepts and implementation methods to help in determining system functionality, state of the art, and potential weaknesses
  • Primary author of technical reports/presentations for projects of high complexity. Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverable
Additional Responsibilities
  • Integrate with study planning, mission modeling, and data analysis functional teams
  • Lead by example, establish best practices and coding patterns, and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code
  • Identify areas of dependency and overlap with other teams or team members and drive coordination to resolve conflicts between teams
  • Support deployment of DevOps pipelines for automated build, check, and test of software and or firmware items
  • Document software requirements and design implementations.
  • Develop skills and training as part of the greater GTRI workforce using professional development funding
