Description
The Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit civil law firm, seeks a self-motivated, outgoing Paralegal for the Piedmont Regional Office. The successful candidate will assist staff attorneys in civil litigation cases in a variety of practice areas including family law, public benefits, housing, and other practice areas.
Responsibilities:
· Represents eligible clients in administrative cases according to office priorities.
· Travels to senior centers to do community education lectures and interviews with seniors needing legal assistance.
· Participates in case acceptance meetings and staff meetings.
· Conducts intake phone interviews on public benefits, unemployment, Medicare, Medicaid, and social security cases.
· Counsels eligible clients under the direction of an attorney.
· Prepares effective written briefs as needed for client advocacy, under the supervision of an attorney.
· Develops good advocacy and administrative representation skills (including legal analysis, research, investigation, case development, and preparation)
· Acts as a substantive leader in the areas of social security, unemployment, Medicare, Medicaid, and public benefits.
· Keeps current on knowledge of office priorities, procedures, and GLSP/LSC regulations and priorities.
· Maintains effective case management and file organization
· Maintains basic knowledge of substantive law affecting administrative areas of practice and shares such information with other legal staff.
· Maintains a courteous and professional attitude toward other staff, clients, and community contacts, etc.
· Maintains a caseload of 25-50 cases.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
·Vehicle and valid driver’s license required for business-related travel
· Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· Effective oral and written communication skills
· Excellent computer skills and demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office programs
· Demonstrated desire and capacity to serve low-income populations
· Excellent interpersonal skills
· Experience working in a law firm or nonprofit organization preferred
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Proven ability to innovate and improve existing programs
· High School Graduate; some college preferred
· Ability to speak Spanish is preferred
The starting salary is $34,250 but is dependent upon experience and qualifications: GLSP offers excellent fringe benefits.
