GEORGETOWN-SCOTT COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION

POSITION TITLE: Water Safety Instructor (WSI/LGI) (Part-Time/Seasonal)

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

GRADE: N/A

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Aquatic Manager and Aquatic Instructor Trainer

SALARY: $12.00 - $17.00

DEPARTMENT: Aquatics

CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) plans, prepares for, and teaches American Red Cross swim lessons. The instructor may teach one to five (5) lessons in a week depending on the swim lesson session. The WSI is responsible for the safety and instruction of class participants from 6 months of age up to and including elderly students.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBIITIES:

Essential: May be called in on short notice or substitute for another swim lesson instructor. All potential employees will need to complete a pre-season skills assessment before they begin work. The WSI will instruct and lead various water safety classes and swimming activities for individuals of all ages. This position requires the WSI to write lesson plans, complete appropriate American Red Cross documents and participation reports. WSIs routinely make decisions involving the guidance and safety of participants and activities. They are always responsible for the safety of their students. Assure the safety of participants at all times: never turning their back on their students. Makes participants aware of all areas of the pool (deep water, locker rooms, trash cans, etc.) Greets participants in the designated area and escorts students to and from the pool area. Will make lesson plans for all classes assigned and submit and review with the management team. Uses teaching methods and language appropriate to the ages and abilities of the students. Keep accurate records of participant skills and attendance. Fills out ARC forms and turns them in within two (2) working days to the WSI Coordinator. Strives to give opportunities for skill practice for all students during lessons. Stays well-groomed at all times. Must be prepared for each class ten (10) minutes prior to the start. Communicates positive and constructive student feedback to parents/guardians of school aged participants. Constantly strives to improve participants knowledge of water safety and stroke development. Participates in regular staff in-service trainings, contributes to the improvement and growth of the organizations Learn-to-Swim program, and will maintain all certifications. Ensures that while they are teaching, they will have a lifeguard on duty. When not teaching, WSI may be responsible for lifeguard duties. Media relations are the job of the Aquatic Manager or the Parks and Recreation Director. Refer all media to the Aquatic Manager or the Parks and Recreation Director. Do not give a statement.

Nonessential: May be asked to assist Aquatic Instructor Trainer and Aquatic Managers with other tasks as needed.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Training, Experience: College student preferable, Minimum High school diploma or GED certificate. Completion of three (3) year of high school required. Must be 17 years of age or older. Certified in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Certified in ARC Lifeguard Training and First Aid or certified in American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED. Desired experience as a lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, working with the public.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of American Red Cross WSI training principles and procedures. Knowledge of body mechanics and aquatic body mechanics. Knowledge of classroom management techniques. Extensive knowledge of water safety.

Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Parks and Recreation employees and the public. Ability to manage three to six small children at a time or up to ten parents with infants at once. Ability to plan and prepare for 30- to 45-minute-long instructional classes. Ability to swim and tread water for long periods of time while giving instructions. Ability to provide quality customer service to calm and upset customers. Ability to work with small children, youth, teenagers, and/or older adults. Ability to communicate effectively orally. Ability to make decisions and perform under stress when problems arise.

SPECIAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Valid Kentucky drivers license; CPR and First Aid certified.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Instructions: Given during WSI training, introduction as a WSI, and generally by the WSI Coordinator from day to day.

Processes: Prepares for swim lessons by writing lesson plans and block plans including activities, safety concepts, and games. Will prepare instruction area and instructional equipment. Will communicate with parents and/or guardians regarding the students progress in the class.

Review of Work: Work is generally reviewed through oral and written reports. Evaluation interviews are conducted once to three times per year.

Work Environment: Indoor pool area.

Availability: Must be available to teach multiple swim lessons one day per week for 6-8 weeks or 4-5 lessons each day for 2-3 weeks. Preferred to be able to work on short notice/substitute for other instructors.

Physical Demands:

Lifting: Required (up to 50 pounds). Requires standing, walking, swimming, and treading water.

Use of Equipment: kick boards, pool noodles, diving pool toys, floating pool toys, operation of 25-yard lap swim lane lines, and any other equipment found in the pool area.
