General Description

General Stamping & Metalworks is a top fast paced metals fabricator producing various customer designed products for the automotive, agricultural, solar, structural, and other industries utilizing; CNC laser, CNC punch, press brake, stamping, robotic welding, and various other production processes.

The Quality Inspector’s priority is to support production, verifying processes are producing conforming parts to customers’ requirements through the utilization of various inspection methods.

Organizational Relationships and Authority

The Quality Inspector reports directly to the Quality Manager

Key Responsibilities

The Quality Inspector’s responsibilities include the following:

  • Verifying production processes are setup properly by:
    • Inspecting critical characteristics on the first piece and last piece
  • Accurately recording inspection data.
  • Performing first article layout analysis, recording and communicating results.

Job Demands and Expectations

Quality Inspectors are expected to work independently managing time and priorities accordingly while maintaining the production flow and assuring quality. Inspectors shall have the ability to effectively communicate with production operators, supervisors, and engineers. Inspectors shall be capable of working efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and be available to work extended hours and weekends supporting the associated production shift.

  • Understands basic quality terms, definitions and concepts
  • Understands the team concept and supports team initiatives
  • Understands types of measurement, measurement terminology and is able to use and interpret the different types of measurement scales
  • Able to correctly measure parts using surface plate layouts
  • Able to identify/recognize inspection errors and initiate resolution
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and know definitions of critical, major and minor characteristics
  • Understands the x, y, z coordinate system.
  • Able to identify and report nonconforming material
  • Understands traceability (product, material)
  • Must have a strong knowledge of basic mathematical operations and the ability to perform measurement conversions competently including the ability to solve for x, and add and subtract degrees, minutes, and seconds

Qualifications and Competencies

The Quality Inspector must demonstrate the following:

  • Proficient at reading customers’ drawings and identify critical characteristics
  • Able to competently make interpretations of product’s quality needs
  • Experience operating a manual CMM (Required)
  • Proficient with math, calculations, conversions of various units, and geometry
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel
  • Ability to make decisions assessing and dispositioning products’ state of quality compared to customers’ needs

  • Written Communication: Writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.

Education

  • CQI, Certified Quality Inspector certification preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • 3 years experience as a quality inspector in a manufacturing facility using various gages

Work Environment

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly or occasionally required to meet the following physical demands:

  • Able to wear proper PPE for the inspection task that may include but not limited to: Earplugs, Safety Glasses, Kevlar Gloves, Kevlar Sleeves, Face shield, steel toed boots with metatarsal guards
  • Able to lift 40 pounds when necessary
  • Able to speak clearly and understandably.
  • Ability to hear within a range that enables telephone communication.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to see a computer screen within reasonable reading distance without strain.
  • Able to type at a keyboard without bodily or psychological discomfort.
  • Ability to ambulate around the office environment and manufacturing floor comfortably and safely in order to fulfill tasks required in various offices and departments.
  • Ability to travel via aircraft or automobile to other plant locations for inspection, training or auditing activities
