General Summary
Support the Charlottesville Department of Utilities in fulfilling its service to provide efficient and safe utilities to all in our community. The Charlottesville Department of Utilities - Water/Wastewater Division is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III - Department of Utilities who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III depending on qualifications.
The preferred hiring range for a Maintenance Worker II is between $18.38 - $18.90 Hourly. ($38,230.40 - $39,312.00 Annually).
The preferred hiring range for a Maintenance Worker III is between $19.66 - $22.25 Hourly. ($40,892.80 - $46,280 Annually).
Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Maintenance Worker II performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned; does related work as required.
Maintenance Worker III primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Performs responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools; occasionally operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned. Does related work as required.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Maintenance Worker II:
  • Responsible for facilities, grounds and/or City infrastructure maintenance functions;
  • Assists with construction and maintenance projects;
  • Performs simple repair and completes maintenance assignments;
  • May be exposed to or required to use chemicals in general maintenance responsibilities;
  • Assists senior workers in semiskilled work and the use of hand tools and maintenance equipment;
  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
  • May operate vehicles as required;
  • Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintenance Worker III

  • Performs repairs and completes maintenance assignments;

  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
  • Operates vehicles as required;
  • Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams or independently to complete assigned tasks;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience and Skills
Maintenance Worker II Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct work experience in the field.)
  • General knowledge of maintenance, repair and/or construction activities.
  • General knowledge of mechanical and automotive equipment.
Special Requirements:
  • May require a valid VA driver's license by employment start date.
  • May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
Maintenance Worker II Skills: Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Maintenance Worker III Minimum Qualifications:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct work experience in the field.)
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience in a similar position as a skilled worker in the maintenance, repair and or construction activity to which assigned;
  • Requires some prior experience in the operation of the equipment to which assigned.

  • Requires the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
Maintenance Worker III Skills: General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; general knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work. Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to be contacted by phone in case of emergency.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Requires the ability to perform strenuous manual labor, often under unfavorable conditions, including considerable walking, lifting, stooping and carrying.
Positions in the Department of Utilities are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements. Must be able to be contacted by phone in case of emergency and reside within 40 minutes response time to the City Yard located at 305 4th St NW.
Position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

    3. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.
    • Pension:
      • Choose from two options:
        • A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
        • A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
