GASTON COUNTY SCHOOLS is Hiring a Facilities - Electronics Technician Near Gastonia, NC

Definition
The employee is required to perform skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, replacement, and repair of standard electronic devices, electronic subsystems, and electronic systems. Employee reviews prepared sketches, diagrams, schematics, blueprints, manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications to conduct repairs. Employees may be required to modify existing circuitry to improve performance or layout circuitry to provide for special functions such as the interfacing of individual devices into systems. The employee is expected to resolve most problems with minimum assistance and receives limited supervision.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
The work is technical with analysis of more complex construction, modification, or repair problems in audio-visual, computer, and other related building systems. Employees in this class independently troubleshoot alarms, intercom, television, computer, and electronic control systems. Employee reviews the electronic requirements of existing buildings, compares these requirements to the existing systems, and recommends modifications or new construction to achieve system effectiveness and efficiency. The employee often serves as a technical expert to other staff members. Work is performed independently usually under the general supervision of an electrical supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities
•Troubleshoots the more complex intercom, fire alarm, and television network problems, determines parts needed, and repair procedures.
•Analyzes building life safety systems, intercom systems, and computer and television networks. Recommends, specifies, inspects, and manages bids for replacement projects.
•Upfits and upgrades wiring and equipment to meet and satisfy new and increasing National Fire Protection Association codes, regulations, and GCS standards.
•Researches new equipment, codes, and procedures for possible adoption and use.
•Reviews proposed new construction programs and makes recommendations for inclusion in the project. Surveys sites for renovation, expansion, and upgrades.
•Plans, schedules, budgets, and secures necessary materials to successfully complete system repairs.
•Programs intercoms and bells.
•Follows safety rules and regulations in performing the assigned tasks and operating required equipment, such as power tools, hand tools, and motor vehicles.
•Installs, services, and repairs electronic equipment following manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and manufacturer’s specifications.
•Must be proficient in the use of all industry hand tools, power tools, and electronic test equipment.
•Reviews work orders and prioritizes accordingly.
•Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge to diagnose the cause of the malfunction.
•Replaces defective components, and wiring, and adjusts mechanical parts.
•Aligns, adjusts, and calibrates equipment according to specifications.
•Maintains records of repairs, calibrations, and tests.
•Compiles technical/electronic literature.
•Maintains an inventory of electronic replacement parts.
•Recommends purchase of additional shop equipment or replacement of equipment.
•Designs or redesigns computer control circuitry to improve performance.
•Provides support to other trades and work groups as needed in the operation of Gaston County Schools.
•Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Knowledge of building, electrical, fire alarm, and safety codes.
•Considerable knowledge of electronic principles and the application of electronic theory in low-voltage systems.
•Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general electronic maintenance and repair work.
•Skilled in the use of computers for troubleshooting and programming, with the ability to troubleshoot efficiently and make needed repairs.
•Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary for electronic work.
•Ability to understand and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches or penciled drawings, manuals, and manufacturer’s specifications.
•Ability to communicate effectively to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others.
•Ability to understand and follow oral or written directions.
Physical Requirements
•Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
•Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
•Must possess the visual acuity to operate required equipment and motor vehicles, use measuring devices, and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
•Completes some work on-site necessitating being physically able to work off ladders, and lifts, work in crawl spaces, above ceilings and on roofs, etc. under prevailing environmental conditions.
Education and Experience
•Minimum of High School Diploma or GED
•Two (2) Year Degree in Electronics, preferred
•Minimum Three (3) to Five (5) Years of Electronic Repair Experience
Special Requirements
•Employee must possess or be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate driver’s license recognized by North Carolina for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
•Some occasional overtime and weekend work may be required, depending on workload or work requests.
•Provides support to other trades and work groups as needed in the operation of Gaston County Schools.
•Some occasional emergency response workers may be required.
Certification/Licensure Compensation – not to exceed twelve percent (12%)
This position may be eligible for up to a 12% increase:
Fire Alarm Systems, Inspector License9% increase
Security (Installer) Certification2% increase
Reports to: MEP Manager and/or Director of Facilities
Salary: Grade 67
Classification: Non-Exempt
