Gaston County Schools Career Site is Hiring a First Responder @ Ashbrook High iAccelerate Academy Near Gastonia, NC

Definition
The employee in this position will be trained to administer initial first aid care to persons suddenly injured or ill until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. This employee will apply basic first aid procedures for common illnesses and injuries. This type of first aid generally consists of simple, but in some cases, potentially life-saving techniques that this individual can apply with minimal equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Responds to emergency situations and provides basic first aid to those who become unexpectedly ill or injured.
• Ensures that primary basic first aid procedures are initiated until advanced medical services can be obtained. 
• Required to attend afterschool sporting events (including practices) to provide first aid assistance to students, participants, and spectators, as necessary.
• Works with Athletic Director, Coaches, and Bus Drivers to make sure first aid kits are supplied to meet minimum standards.
• Maintains certification in Basic Coronary Life Support (BCLS, Heimlich maneuver) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). BCLS can be obtained through the American Heart Association and/or the American Red Cross. Provides a copy of certification as proof.
• Maintains first aid supplies in an easy-to-access emergency kit by checking the kit daily (chart findings) to make sure the kit is properly sealed.
• Develops a checklist for daily use to chart findings on first aid supplies/equipment. 
• Reports all workplace injuries including those involving blood or other infectious materials.
• Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the Automatic External Defibrillator. 
• Ability to apply first aid in emergency situations including, but not limited to, minor burns, cuts, scrapes, etc.
• Ability to communicate (call-out on a cell phone, walkie-talkie, etc.) effectively to request additional medical help.
• Ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
• Ability to develop a checklist for daily monitoring of first aid kits and equipment.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers.
• Ability to maintain records and abide by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) to keep the information confidential.
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
• Must possess the visual acuity to operate required office equipment and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions.
Minimum Education and Experience
• Minimum of High School diploma; college preferred.
• Three years experience as Emergency Medical Technician or other Emergency Response Technician, preferred.
• Current certification in Basic Life Support (CPR, Heimlich) applications and techniques.
• Current in Bloodborne Pathogens training.
• Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) such as Gaston Rescue, Volunteer Firefighters, etc., preferred.
Salary: Entry Level (Grade 55, Step 02)
