Electronic Technician – Salem, OR

General Position Summary:

Assembles, disassembles, and conducts tests/diagnostics on computer systems and electronic components to evaluate the condition of the equipment and determine if reparable; makes repairs and refurbishes in a timely manner; performs final testing on completed units. Documents work in progress, completed work, and other required information in a timely manner.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

  • Disassembles computer systems and electronic components.
  • Conducts a variety of diagnostic tests to determine usability of components.
  • Makes reasonable repairs/refurbishes components for resale, including erasing all existing information from hard drive.
  • Completes final testing on repaired/refurbished components.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of all work performed.
  • Consults with IT staff on technical issues when necessary.

Secondary Functions:

  • Provides training to employees as needed.
  • Provides input on ways the organization can create integrated employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
  • Attends meetings and participates on committees as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Scope:

Performs duties independently with little direction given; operates from established and well-known procedures. Decisions are made within general company constraints but may occasionally require independent decision making. Makes informal departmental budgetary recommendations and is responsible for providing input concerning long-range operational planning.

Mistakes/errors may result in work stoppage; inappropriate repair/refurbishing or equipment can cause misrepresentation of products for resale, all of which could cause customer dissatisfaction and may increase operating expenses and/or decrease revenues as well as creating a negative impact on Garten in the community.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position is not supervisory in nature; however, daily work direction or training may be provided to personnel in subordinate positions.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Has both internal and external contacts. The most common internal contacts are with own department staff and supervisor. The most frequent external contacts are with customers, vendors, and service representatives. The types of interactions, for both internal and external contacts, involve information exchange and problem solving.

Contacts, both internal and external, are usually made at the employee’s own initiative with 80% being over the telephone and/or by email and 20% face to face.

Specific Job Skills Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Ability to actively participate in team development and team-oriented processes.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and operations.
  • Proficiency in data entry and calculator operation.
  • Basic understanding of computer operating systems and licensing requirements.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Detailed knowledge to effectively troubleshoot and repair/refurbish computers and electronic components, including digital and analog systems.
  • Ability to reprogram components.
  • Ability to develop and produce specification sheets and photos of refurbished components.
  • General knowledge and understanding of OSHA standards for computer components.
  • Valid Oregon Drivers’ License, acceptable driving record, and proof of current vehicle insurance.
  • Physical ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, grasp, handle objects and make repetitive movements with hands and wrists during a normal workday.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40# occasionally during a normal workday.
  • Physical ability to push/pull/move up to 1000# with a pallet jack, on a cart, or with assistance occasionally during a normal workday.

Education and Experience Required:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Completion of a technical program in PC and electronics repair.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of related experience, with experience in a production setting given preference.
  • A 2-year degree in computer science or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training may substitute for 1 year or experience.
  • A Certification preferred.
