Director of Education and Youth Development

Garden State Equality is seeking a Director of Education and Youth Development, with the supervision and assistance of the Deputy Director, to oversee Garden State Equality’s Education and Youth Development programs.The Director will be responsible for managing the project life cycles of all but not limited to the following programs throughout the state of New Jersey: Changemakers Leadership Program, Youth Advisory Board, Educational, and Safe Schools Initiatives, and Educators for Equality. The Director will oversee the Education and Youth Development team to execute quality programming, while combating disparities LGBTQ youth face in extracurriculars and in their communities, while working to ensure that all students, teachers, families, and administrators are safe in their schools.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Programming:

  • Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Director of Education and Youth Development is responsible for overseeing implementation of all Educational programs.
  • Work with the Deputy Director to develop a plan for program delivery, maintaining quality, and measuring impact.
  • Work with the Education Director to create trainings and outreach to school districts.
  • Work with Education and Youth Development Team to Facilitate training to Educators, School Administrators, and Students.
  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate program staff, providing support and disciplinary measures when necessary for the annual Changemakers leadership initiative .
  • Spearheads and oversees the day to day operations of youth camp.
  • Develop age appropriate camp curricula and develop and coordinate daily programs and activities for a safe, engaging, high quality summer program.
  • Work with Education and Youth Development Team to oversee, initiate, and engage Youth Advisory Board.
  • Oversee Educators for Equality Committee.
  • Work with the Deputy Director and Health Equity Team to meet all grant deliverables.
  • Cover program delivery when needed, including grant projects.
  • Assess programs and feedback, and implement quality improvement initiatives while developing innovative ideas for programming.
  • Develop and execute a day long summit for learning for youth.
  • Ability to build strong connections within the community and foster collaborations with local partners.

Budgeting & Grant Management:

  • Work with the Deputy Director to develop annual Education and Youth Development Budgets.
  • Support and maintain financial management, bookkeeping systems/files and financial reporting as it pertains to Education and Youth Development programs
  • Works with the Deputy Director and Development team on budgeting and grant proposals.
  • The Director of Education and Youth Development may be asked to conduct research which supports new proposals.

Management:

  • Oversee all Education and Youth Development Project Managers and Coordinators.
  • Work with Deputy Director in goal setting for the Education and Youth Development team.
  • Review and evaluate staff performance and annual reviews.
  • Work with Education and Youth Development Managers and Coordinators to ensure services are consistent, engaging, and relevant to the individuals served.
  • Work to create project lifecycle including deadlines, milestones, and logic models.
  • Cover program delivery when needed, including grant projects.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/EXPERIENCE

  • A strong personal commitment to Garden State Equality’s mission and work in relation to Education and Youth Development.
  • Ability to develop and implement programs related to Garden State Equality’s mission, vision, and philosophy.
  • A familiarity with and understanding of LGBTQ issues and issues of diversity and inclusion, with knowledge of how those issues impact the health and wellbeing of both youth and educators.
  • 5 plus years of experience as a camp director managing similarly structured camps, and developing new camps and youth programs.
  • Extensive experience in planning and developing camp curricula, as well as modifying activities when required.
  • Experience working directly in a classroom, and with students, campers, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the organization’s anti-racist values and practices.
  • Experience with forecasting, developing, managing, and modifying budgets to execute deliverables, and meet the needs of both the program and organization.
  • Advanced ability to recruit, train, and maintain a strong and diverse camp team to help deliver quality programming and camp environment. Extensive experience developing schedules and reviewing and evaluating performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing and diverse teams who deliver on ambitious goals and benchmarks.
  • Ability to provide teams with a clear sense of direction under tight timelines, especially in times of change.
  • Strong listening, trust-building, and interpersonal skills with ability to influence, engage, and build relationships with both staff and stakeholders.
  • Record of building coalitions and partnerships with like-minded organizations.
  • Demonstrated strong facilitation and group leadership skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency in Google Workspace and Windows/Microsoft Office environment, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience working in a leadership capacity with diverse groups.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and take initiative independently.
  • The ability to collaboratively develop curriculum for educational programming.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong presentation, oral, and written communication skills.
  • An understanding of assessment and measurement tools.
  • Willingness and flexibility to engage in occasional weekend, evening, and overnight residential programs.
  • Must have own car, valid driver’s license, and auto liability insurance.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 30 pounds.
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred.
  • BA or equivalent in a related field preferred, plus minimum of 3 years’ experience in program development and work in the fields of education, organizational development, and social justice (with a concentration in LGBTQ issues).

Full-time annual salary commensurate with experience.
