Position Objective: Provide services as a Science Writer in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position will develop scientific communication products and contribute to communications plans to generate understanding of NIAID- funded research in areas including HIV, TB, mpox, sexually transmitted infections, allergy, immunology, and transplantation. This position will operate in a fast-paced team and perform duties including: Develop high-quality written press, web, and social media materials, Work diplomatically and collaboratively with disease area subject matter experts to anticipate, prepare and finalize communications for specific milestones, Engage in media relations, mainly targeted pitching and responding to inquiries, Other tasks to serve the mission of NIAID's Office of Communications and Government Relations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Attend routine staff meetings to gather information necessary to develop effective communication projects, plans and strategies. 3
• Research and write in appropriate scientific or technical style various communication products, to include press releases, newsletter articles, media releases, fliers, web content and video and podcast scripts. 1
• Monitor the effectiveness of media campaigns through traditional and social media channels, assess results and report findings.
• Coordinate photographic and videographic resources to capture quality imagining and footage for posting to social media and Internet sites with appropriate captions.
• Respond to media inquiries promptly.
• Identify needs and develop content for various communication mediums to increase visibility of the program. 2
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with members of the press and external stakeholders.
• Attend workshops, seminars and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.
• Coordinate with other program offices to create outreach and engagement plans.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge on major scientific advances, policy issues, and sensitive issues for assigned topic areas - Daily
• Maintain civil, culturally appropriate engagement with all NIAID staff and external contacts - Daily

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, General Social Sciences, Community and Public Health, Biochemical Sciences, Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Miscellaneous Biology, or Molecular Biology.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office.
• Experienced in social media, public relations, media relations, strategic communications, message development, copy editing, and science writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
• Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
