Position Summary
Career Readiness Learning Objectives: Career Peer Mentors will develop the following competencies set forth by the National Association of Colleges & Employers
COMMUNICATION: Career Peer Mentors will communicate with students in 1:1 settings utilizing effective coaching methods and active listening to assess and meet students’ resume needs. Along with the 1:1 communication, Career Peer Mentors will develop their public speaking skills through presentations on behalf of the Office of Career Exploration & Development. Lastly, written communication is a vital part of this position both with guiding students through writing an effective resume as well as inputting notes accurately into the Handshake system for future data use.
TECHNOLOGY: Career Peer Mentors must be proficient in navigating and teaching all resources provided by Career Exploration & Development including Handshake, and Big Interview. Students have the opportunity to further their knowledge in pulling data from these sites for yearly reports.
PROFESSIONALISM: In this role, an understanding and respect of confidentiality is a must due to career peer mentors having more access and knowledge of other students’ personal information. Practicing confidentiality is a key part of professionalism. Also, the students represent The Office of Career Exploration & Development, there is an expectation to dress professionally for the role and communicate efficiently with all parties they may work with.
Hiring one Career Peer Mentor in the Student Success Center located in Palumbo Academic Center for 6 hours per week this summer.
We are seeking a student with a flexible schedule who is eager to work alongside our career advisors. Student must be passionate about providing a welcoming environment for students, staff, and faculty in a way that encourages community, networking, and service to promote transformational experiences. In addition to gaining mentorship and leadership skills through 1:1 guidance and team-building experiences.
CAREERPEERMENTOR:
Will be a part of a diverse and supportive team of professional staff
members and students
Must be willing to provide excellent customer service by answering phones, responding to emails, and make appointments according to needs and requests
Student will act as first-line advisor to undergrad initial resume and cover letter development/reviews as well as Career Closet appointments
Student will assist with office overview presentations to academic classes and student organizations
Assist with incoming Career Closet donations including thank-you notes and tax-exempt forms.
Managing Career Closet inventory including current items available and items received by students
Preparing donations to be put in the closet by restocking folding, hanging, steaming, etc.

Ability to promote student success stories and opportunities
Ability to maintain responsibilities regarding confidential paperwork, reports, assisting students with software and resources – among other functions
Ability to maintain an organized and professional workspace
Demonstration of a proactive and positive attitude and passion for living out Gannon values
Exhibition of a strong work ethic and ability to effectively communicate to students, staff and faculty coming into the SSC
Respect for rules of confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrate the desire to grow personally and professional and possess values of living out the Gannon experience
Past experience writing a resume/cover letter for a class assignment or application
Physical Demands
Must be able to navigate the office and the entire campus environment with ease as the job requires one to deliver documents, small packages, and run errands from time-to-time
