Title:  Heavy Equipment Operator I

Department: Road & Bridge

Division: Flood Control / FM Lateral Roads / Beach

Reports to: Drainage Manager / Paving Manager / Drainage & Beach Manager

Direct Reports: n/a

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment to assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs and operates tools or equipment.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • Emergency Preparedness Tier Level: 2 Flood / 3 FM Lateral Roads / 3 Beach
  • Operates and maintains road paving construction equipment including rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, and water trucks.
  • Patches roadways, cuts brush, and picks up and disposes of trash and brush.
  • Loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.
  • Drives a medium sized truck to transport personnel, supplies, and materials.
  • May flag traffic as needed.
  • May perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance functions.
  • Able to report regularly for work and be on time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 0-1 years of experience in construction, repair and maintenance of roadways, bridges, beaches and drainage systems.
  • 0-1 years of experience operating heavy and light construction equipment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment and vehicles
  • Need to know what the safety policies and procedures are for this position
  • Ability to analyze problems and find solutions
  • Ability to complete tasks with a lower level of operational proficiency
  • Excellent skill in oral and written communication
  • Must possess or ability to readily obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Texas with a Tanker Endorsement
  • Must pass a Criminal Background check.
  • Must pass a driver's license background check.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Must be able to pass alcohol and drug testing.
