Title: Diesel Mechanic (Maritime Technician)
Reports To: Engineer Department Supervisor

Job Summary:
The mechanic will perform routine and emergency maintenance as directed by engineering department supervisors. This position is responsible for upholding best engineering practices for assigned tasks, as well as promoting safe work practices with all employees, vendors, and visitors. Mechanic classification requires experience and proficiency in one or more defined skills such as diesel mechanic, electrician, HVAC, welding, pipefitting, hydraulics and pneumatic systems, and carpentry. Key Interaction (Internal & External):
Companywide staff and managers, G&H’s executive leadership, senior client leadership, mariners, industry associations, and 3rd party support and consultants.
Job Responsibilities:
Leads and assists mechanic apprentice to learn skills
Perform routine and emergency maintenance requirements on a fleet of tugs as directed by engineering department supervisors
Regularly assist outside of areas of expertise as required for tug maintenance and repair
Work with other company mechanics as needed
Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
Ability to repair marine equipment on-site in adverse conditions and at all hours
Ability to work aboard tugs using winches and mechanical tools
Caterpillar engine experience preferred, especially in 3500 series engines
Experience with mechanics' hand and power tools, grinders, and forklifts
Marine engine and gear experience preferred (EMD, John Deere and Caterpillar experience)
Familiarity with repair on shipyards, tugs, and barges essential
2 years of craft experience in maritime repairs on vessels
Education of equipment as used on vessels
TWIC Card
First Aid/CPR Training
Valid State Driver’s License
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work weekends, holidays, at night, and willing to take on-call responsibilities: Normal business hours are 0730-1600, Monday thru Friday. However, G&H towing tugs operate 24/7, and maintenance and repairs are ongoing 24/7, 365 days per year. Each mechanic is expected to be available to work (after hours & weekend days) when assigned by the engineering department supervisor
Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Ability to work alongside office staff and vessel crew members
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters and areas of the organization
Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions
Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance
The broad breadth of engineering knowledge of vessels and related equipment
Experience in the marine industry
Knowledge of the T.S.M.S (i.e. Towing Safety Management System)
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
Proven ability to troubleshoot common maintenance issues
Must be physically fit enough to board vessels in all weather conditions
Possess a valid TWIC card
Possess a valid state driver’s license for occasional travel requirements, as well as in compliance with G&H drivers’ policy

Skilled at job assessment for repairs
Thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities/limitations
