G&A Partners' client is currently seeking a Unit Leader 2/Camp Counselor to join its team in Utopia, TX.

Girl Scouts take the lead in bettering their communities and the world. Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWTX) serves more than 10,000 girls and nearly 4,000 adult volunteers in a 21-county jurisdiction. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) is a collection of activities and experiences where girls earn badges, sell cookies, go on exciting trips, explore the outdoors, and participate in or lead take-action projects that make a difference. The GSLE empowers girls to discover their own world as they develop a strong sense of self and strengthen values, connect with others in a global community as girls form caring relationships, promote cooperation and embrace diversity, and take action in the world as girls identify and solve problems they care about. 

We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp position at Camp La Jita. La Jita, meaning “precious possession”, was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

Unit Leader 2/Camp Counselor (Reports to Assistant Camp Director)

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise Unit Leader 1’s and maintain a mutually respectful relationship between all staff. 
  • Know each girl in the unit and share the interests of each. 
  • Supervise bedtime and wakeup routines. 
  • Ensure that girls arrive at the program prepared with appropriate clothing, materials, and levels of hygiene. 
  • Engage in conflict resolution between campers, as necessary. 
  • Be aware of the health and physical well-being of the campers and report any concerns to the Residential Camp Nurse. 
  • Ensure that campers receive their daily medications, if necessary. 
  • Help girls plan and implement activities for the unit. Camp programs may include, but are not limited to: cookouts, hiking, games, art projects and camping out overnight. 
  • Assist and direct campers in daily camp chores (called Kapers).
  • Communicate with camper guardians on drop-off/pickup days. 
  • Assist in drop-off/pick up day procedures. 
  • Report any behavioral concerns to Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director. 
  • Report any needed repairs or supplies to the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director or Administrative Assistant.
  • Adhere to the national and council policies, procedures, and plans. 
  • Attend weekly staff meetings. 
  • Hold campers and other staff members to principles of the Girl Scout Law, to ensure a harmonious environment. 
  • Participates in all camp activities.
  • Acts as a host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.
  • Follows and adheres to National and Council policies, procedures, and plans.
  • Operates according to ACCT standards and local operational procedures. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requirements:(Minimum qualifications and experience)

  • Must be at least 21 years of age OR returning staff 
  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Must enjoy working with youths on a one-on-one basis.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR by the American Red Cross.
  • Willingness to work as a team member. 
  • Prior residential camp experience a plus.
  • Be flexible, energetic, and have a good sense of humor. 
  • Must be able to walk long distances.
  • Girl Scouts experience is a plus.
  • Must attend mandatory staff training sessions for the position May 28 – June 1, and June 3 – 7, 2024.
  • Must be available to stay at camp June 9 – July 26, 2024, from 10:00 am Sunday morning until 6:00 pm the following Friday evening. Staff may stay on camp property over the weekend if necessary. (Camp will not be in session June 30 – July 6, 2024.)

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include heavy visual acuity.

  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 

Work Environment

  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering camp programs.
  • Work daily with exposure to the sun and heat.

Compensation: $600 per week (plus meals and housing included)
