Qualifications/RequirementsEducation and Certification:
- Associate's degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant program from an accredited institution.
- Successful completion of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.
- Prior experience as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, preferably in a skilled nursing facility or similar setting.
- Experience in geriatric care, addressing functional limitations, cognitive impairments, and rehabilitation needs.
- Proficiency in implementing treatment plans developed by Occupational Therapists to address patients' goals and promote functional independence.
- Ability to perform therapeutic activities and exercises to improve patients' strength, coordination, and motor skills.
- Understanding of adaptive equipment and assistive devices to enhance patients' independence in daily activities.
- Knowledge of cognitive rehabilitation techniques and strategies to support individuals with cognitive impairments.
- Familiarity with environmental modifications and recommendations to improve patients' home or living environments.
- Ability to provide guidance and training to patients, family members, and caregivers regarding home exercises and strategies for functional improvement.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with patients, their families, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Empathy and patience to work with individuals who may have physical or cognitive challenges.
- A collaborative approach to working with other healthcare professionals, such as Occupational Therapists, nurses, speech-language pathologists, and physical therapists.
- Adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines for Occupational Therapy Assistant practice.
- Competence in maintaining accurate and timely documentation of treatment sessions, progress notes, and relevant patient information.
- Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and continuing education activities to stay updated with advancements in the field.
- Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods to assist patients during therapy sessions.
- Physical dexterity to facilitate therapeutic activities, assist with transfers, and use equipment.
- Capacity to lift and position patients as needed.
