Friends of the Tubac Presidio & Museum is Hiring an Education and Exhibits Coordinator Near Tubac, AZ

Position Title: Education and Exhibits Coordinator

Reports to: Director

Type of Employment: Part Time, up to 30 hours per week

Salary: $20-22/hour DOE

Arizona’s first state park, the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park features a museum, three historic buildings, eight educational gardens, and a unique underground exhibit. With both indoor and outdoor experiences, our park celebrates the vibrant multicultural history of Southern Arizona and the unique natural resources that we continue to rely on today.

The Friends of the Tubac Presidio and Museum, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit, manages the Tubac Presidio Historic State Park and Museum and all its operations on behalf of and in partnership with Arizona State Parks and Trails.

Position Description: Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Education and Exhibits Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of engaging, inquiry-based, interactive programming for visitors of all ages. The Coordinator will be responsible for the development and implementation of field trip experiences, in collaboration with the Visitor Experience Manager. Additionally, the Coordinator will support the planning, development, and implementation of museum exhibitions, including interpretive signage for gardens. As part of responsibilities over exhibits, the Education and Exhibits Coordinator will also lead the volunteer-based Collections Management Committee on the management and daily operations of the museum’s collections.

This is a hybrid work position; while most of the key responsibilities must be completed onsite, some responsibilities can be completed through telecommuting.

Key Responsibilities

Exhibit Development

  • In collaboration with the Director, volunteers, and contractors, plan exhibits and prepare relevant artifacts for exhibitions.
  • As needed, prepare galleries for installation, including patching, light painting, and cleaning.
  • Support the development of interpretation strategies to ensure exhibit alignment with museum exhibition best practices.

Education and Programs

  • Research, develop, and train tours for delivery to the public throughout the park and historic buildings.
  • Assist in planning and developing public programming and interpretive signage in the gardens and historic buildings.
  • In collaboration with Visitor Experience Manager and Community Engagement Coordinator, plan and implement educational programs including lectures, concerts, and special events.

Collections Management

  • Collaborate with the Collections Management Committee to register and catalog items in the Past Perfect 5 system as needed, ensuring continuity between digital records and hard copies.
  • Track and report any changes in the status of the collections, including changes in storage or location.
  • Coordinate with Arizona State Parks and Trails on collections storage, management, and status.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Must have knowledge of museum best practices; an interest in history is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of inquiry-based learning principles.
  • Familiarity with Arizona state education standards is a plus.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and enjoys working with people.
  • Must be highly organized and able to plan efficiently.
  • Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
  • Knowledge of Google Suite products, including gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Meets.
  • Strong grammatical skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with active listening.

Abilities:

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in education, public history, parks and recreation, or museums.
  • Experience working in a front line customer service position.
  • Experience working with children.

Education

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education in Education, History, Museum Studies, or related field.
