Job Title: Film Curator
Department: Programming
Reports to: Director of Programming and Cultural Affairs
Designation: Exempt / Full-Time
Salary: $80,000-$95,000

The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is the leading French language and cultural center in the U.S. Since 1898, FIAF has been dedicated to creating and offering New Yorkers innovative and unique programs in education and the arts, all exploring the evolving diversity and richness of French cultures.

Position Overview:
FIAF is seeking a dynamic, creative, and experienced Film Curator to join its team. The position involves reimagining FIAF’s film program at large to propose a strategic vision for presenting French and Francophone films throughout the year. The Film Curator will play a critical role in program development, film selection, and fostering partnerships to enhance FIAF’s visibility and impact in the film and cultural community. This position reports directly to the Director of Cultural Affairs.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision to increase visibility, attendance and build a more diverse audience for film programming at FIAF
  • Curate and organize regular screenings that align with the institutional mission and overall programming vision, including its flagship festivals Crossing the Line and Animation First
  • Build and maintain relationships with filmmakers, distributors, cultural institutions, and industry professionals
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to promote film screenings and festivals
  • Help develop compelling promotional materials for film programs
  • Organize and host screenings, including introductions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers and other guests
  • Work closely with the Director of Cultural Affairs to set programming goals and budgets
  • Stay abreast of trends in cinema, with a particular focus on French and Francophone films
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in film studies, arts administration, or related field. A master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in film programming, film festival organization, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of French and Francophone cinema
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in French preferred, but not essential
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19
