The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and Coronavirus Prevention Network (CoVPN) Laboratory in the Immunology & Vaccine Development Program of the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Division is dedicated to understanding human immunology and mechanisms of vaccine-induced immune protection against HIV and other infectious diseases.

The Fred Hutch offers a vibrant intellectual environment within a beautiful lakeside campus in Seattle’s South Lake Union biotech hub. The Fred Hutch campus contains five major research buildings along with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and is in close proximity to major research partners, such as the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle Children’s Research Institute and the Allen Institute for Immunology.

Position Overview:

The Associate Director's primary role is to spearhead and oversee initiatives ensuring the quality and compliance of laboratory support across HVTN's clinical trials, both domestically and internationally.

The Laboratory Center oversees over 150 laboratories with diverse roles and varying quality requirements including specimen processing, clinical safety testing, immunologic endpoints, HIV diagnostics, virology, biobanking and more. The Associate Direct of Laboratory Program Quality and Compliance leads a global team of at least 10 staff members that oversee quality at these laboratories.

Reporting Structure:

The Associate Director for Laboratory Quality and Compliance reports to the Director of HVTN Laboratory Operations and collaborates closely with the Principal Investigator of the HVTN Laboratory Center.

Responsibilities

  • Quality Assurance Leadership: Guide the central HVTN Quality Assurance Program, interacting with QA managers at over 150 globally distributed partner laboratories to align with HVTN procedures and DAIDS GCLP guidelines.
  • Team Management and Goal Setting:
    • Optimize workflow and monitor productivity within the team.
    • Track team members' satisfaction and report to network leadership.
    • Set individual and collective goals, planning resources accordingly.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a consultant and subject matter expert, ensuring timely response to inquiries and representing HVTN in communications with stakeholders and cross-network projects.
  • Global Team Supervision: Oversee a growing global team of Laboratory Operations QA/QC Associates and Technicians (currently 10), which includes staff in Seattle, Africa and Latin America.
  • Training and Development:
    • Oversee the development and distribution of training materials for participating laboratories and clinical site staff.
    • Monitor training completion, schedule coordination, and performance reviews.
  • Vendor management and Laboratory Oversight:
    • Manage the selection, evaluation, and oversight of local and international laboratories used for HVTN clinical trials.
    • Oversee the creation and implementation of laboratory SOPs and coordinate activities at both domestic and international HVTN sites.
  • Compliance and Auditing:
    • Assess quality of potential new laboratories
    • Host external audits and facilitate internal audits.
    • Assist partner laboratories in preparing for audits and resolving findings.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Provide comprehensive reports including progress updates, workload analysis, and program evaluations. Manage quality systems housing SOPs, workpractice guidelines, audit findings, etc.
  • Special Projects: Assist with special projects and additional duties as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Medical Technologist (MT, ASCP) with specialty preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Ten years of experience in global clinical laboratory management.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 50%) required.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $126,901 to $200,574 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
