Mechanical Designer II

Department: Engineering

Reporting To: Jon Franz

Description

Responsible for managing the design of mechanical products and packaging. Conducts testing and oversees documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the product design activity from concept to validation to manufacture mainly (but not restricted to) CAD/PLM/ERP activities.
  • Creates and reviews drawings that are used to create products, following the standards and norms defined by Franklin Electric. 
  • Tests and resolves issues in products in all stages of the process. Ensuring the implementation of PLM and ERP duties as an engineering user.
  • Verify the result and implementation of his designs searching for improvement opportunities. 
  • Works with external vendors and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides support to other staff and departments as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Participate in engineering forums related to CAD/ERP/PLM activities at the regional level.
  • Collects and share design lessons learned.
  • Keeps up to date with industry design tools and best practices. 

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Skills and Abilities
  • Writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Effectively communicates information and responds to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with vendors, internal and external customers, the general public, and other employees of the organization.
  • Works with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
  • Reads and understands documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Utilizes common-sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.
  • Plans the time, method, manner, and/or performance sequence of own work; may also occasionally assist in planning work assignments performed by others within a limited area of operation.
  • Frequently makes decisions of both minor and major importance, which may affect the work operations of other employees and/or clientele to a moderate degree.
  • Uses noncomplex machines and equipment (adding machines, calculators, copy/fax machines, etc.).
Education and Experience
  • Equivalent of four years of high school (required).
  • Associate’s degree in design technology, engineering technology, or a related field (preferred).
  • Two to four years of relevant experience in design technology, engineering technology, or a related field (required).
  • GD&T (ASME 14.5)
  • Tolerance definition using tolerance stack up tools.
Computer Skills
  • Advanced: CAD/AutoCAD and Creo software, Windchill, ERP system
  • Intermediate: Accounting, database, spreadsheet, word processing/typing.
  • Basic: 10-key, alphanumeric data entry, presentation/PowerPoint.
