Job Title: Phlebotomist

Department: Physician Office 

Reports To: Physician Office Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: 40/week

WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR FCMC

Our Clinical Phlebotomists collect and process blood samples for analysis and performs clerical duties relevant to phlebotomy. More specifically, the Phlebotomists’ responsibilities include:

  • Performing phlebotomy on infants, children, and adults
  • Instructing patients regarding sample collection and routing
  • Processing biological specimens in preparation for analysis, including proper labeling, centrifugation, separation, storing, and appropriate packaging and shipping
  • Inputting patient demographics and doctor’s orders into the lab computer and retrieving results
  • Performing basic, non-interpretive analytic procedures under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager
  • Some relevant clerical duties such as answering phone calls; making copies, filing, and faxing reports and requisitions; and ensuring correct patient orders and billing information

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Phlebotomy training certification or six months of previous phlebotomy experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, basic physiology, proper use and care of laboratory equipment, and protocol for aseptic procedures
  • Basic typing and computer skills, ability to keep accurate records, ability to maintain effective working relationships, and excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to accurately remember and apply oral and written procedures

Essential Job Functions:

  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; type on a keyboard; and reach
  • Required to talk and hear
  • Occasionally required to sit, stand, and walk
  • Continuously performs complex manipulative skills
  • Must be able to move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision 
  • Must wear PPE when situations require
  • Must submit to COVID-19 testing as required by CMS and other regulatory agencies according to FCMC policy
  • Have full COVID-19 vaccination (some exemptions allowed)

Work Environment:

  • FCMC operates 24 hours per day each day of the year: operational needs of departments may require that you be available to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of the patients
  • Potential exposure to blood, body tissue and fluids, contagious diseases, and hazardous waste
  • Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud or unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, and emotional or physical stress
  • May be required to work day or night
  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts 40% of the time
