About Francis Parker School:

One in Mission Hills (Lower School JK-5), and a second in Linda Vista (Middle and Upper School 6-8 and 9-12, respectively).

Job Description:

Francis Parker School seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated and passionate individual to be responsible for all aspects of pool safety and maintenance.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Within Parker’s education-based athletic program, the Lead Lifeguard and Pool Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising the Parker’s lifeguard/water safety staff. Priority duties include: (1) establishing safety policies and procedures, including preventative measures; (2) working with the PE teachers, curriculum coordinators, and administrators of all levels to ensure there is adequate supervision and safety training for all swim programs, including ones offered outside the regular school day; and (3) certifying or arranging for school staff to obtain necessary aquatic certifications; and (4) serving as the primary contact and relationship manager for pool maintenance service providers.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise activities at the aquatics facility.
  • Ensure that aquatics safety policies and procedures are followed at both on campus and off campus (e.g. beaches or non-Parker pools).
  • Evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities, beach/ocean, or other locations for potential dangers or hazards and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the safety of all.
  • Evaluate individuals participating in aquatic activities to assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Correct and, if necessary, discipline swimmers who engage in improper or dangerous activities.
  • Enforce pool regulations and water safety policies.
  • Initiate aquatics emergency action plans as required.
  • Administer first aid in the event of injury, rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning; administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
  • Lifeguard supervision includes: scheduling; determination of need and assigning lifeguards.
  • Provide training and other education to students, faculty, and staff regarding Parker’s water-related safety policies and procedures.
  • Instruct or assist classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.
  • Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that it is safe and usable; supervise and assist in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment; assist with chlorine residual water tests and with records and charts of water tests and records of accidents; add chemicals to pool water as directed.
  • Work with State and County agencies to ensure compliance with local governances; ensure compliance with all water-related activities policies and procedures.
  • Manage the preventative maintenance schedule.

· Provide in service training for lifeguard staff.

· Perform other duties as assigned based on needs.

Qualifications:

· American Red Cross Instructor certification;

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred;
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent;
  • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification or equivalent;
  • American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification, or equivalent;
  • First responder certification preferred;
  • Ocean lifeguarding/rescue experience preferred;
  • Certified Pool Operator certification or ability to obtain this certification within the first six months of employment;
  • Extensive experience hiring, scheduling, and supervising lifeguards;
  • Track record for establishing and enforcing effective pool rules and other safety measures
  • Proven ability to employ lifesaving techniques and rescue methods appropriate for the site and conditions;
  • Knowledge and first-hand experience rendering first aid when accidents in the pool or surrounding areas occur;
  • Experience teaching school-aged children, ideally in a school-setting;
  • In-depth knowledge of proper swimming techniques and ability to teach all age levels;
  • Thorough understanding of regulations governing swimming and pool operations;
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with pool maintenance vendors;
  • Knowledge of water chemistry and pool testing. Ability to evaluate test results and adjust water chemistry as necessary;
  • Familiarity with pool systems, including the ability to troubleshoot and fix basic equipment issues
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a diverse population; and

· Ability to work flexible hours.

Salary and Benefits:

Francis Parker School is committed to attracting and retaining the highest quality faculty and staff through a substantial compensation plan, including competitive salary, TIAA retirement benefits and full medical/dental coverage. Individual salary is negotiable depending on years of experience and educational background.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000 per year, based on experience.
