Project Architect/Planner - Science and Technology

FCA is seeking a creative, and motivated Project Architect / Planner focused on laboratory and related science facilities, to join our growing Science and Technology Team. We are looking for thoughtful individuals with excellent communication and technical skills and interest in developing their knowledge of and experience in planning and design. The position will support the firmwide health science and science and technology effort, with the development, execution, and completion of programmatically complex, technologically advanced, state-of-the-future science projects. Location is preferred in the New York City or Philadelphia regions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Expand personal and firm knowledge of science facility design topics, with the intent of becoming a firm and industry leader in the specialized field.
  • Work with firm’s experts and technical teams by providing guidance to the team and eventually leading laboratory and related projects.
  • Actively participate in educational, social, and professional events, including efforts for business development.
  • Potential travel to project locations outside of the home region.
  • Champion and integrate sustainable design solutions into projects.
  • Prepare architectural documents and presentations required for the projects.
  • Manages all phases of a project with demonstrated technical expertise on projects of various scales and complexities
  • Supervises small to large teams, produces, delegates and coordinates the work, and reviews and approves the work of all internal and external team members
  • Provides final review and approvals of all code analysis, material selections, and specifications
  • Oversee construction document production and management of BIM model
  • Attends client meetings and regularly interfaces with clients and consultants
  • Coordinates with Project Manager(s) and Principal(s) on a regular basis to ensure projects are executed according to workplan; suggests modifications to the workplan and staffing when corrective action is necessary
  • Understands the required scope of work and is accountable for the team’s execution of the work in the most efficient and technically feasible manner
  • Is an advocate for design excellence and encourages team members and consultants to keep design as a priority
  • Implements methods for improving the quality of documentation for the firm in order to mitigate risk; shares this knowledge with junior staff and sets expectations for their accountability
Job Requirements
  • Bachelors and/or Masters in Architecture
  • Registered or working toward registration required
  • 7 years’ experience in an architecture office with at least 5 years’ experience in laboratory design / Science and Technology design.
  • Knowledge of laboratory planning and design principles, standards, guidelines, and codes
  • Proven ability to lead the design, documentation and construction administration process
  • Possesses superior communication, collaborative skills, and mentoring capabilities
  • Ability to use sound and independent judgment
  • Advanced skills in Revit
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Sketch Up, Rhino, 3D Max and Photoshop preferred
  • Laboratory and Science Projects in Higher Education, Pharmaceutical, Health Science, and Corporate R&D preferred
