Job Title: TEACHER ON ASSIGNMENT - STUDENT ADVISOR

Classification: Certified

Salary: Certified Salary Schedule

Description: The Student Advisor works cooperatively with the principal regarding school climate, student intervention, school/classroom behavior management programs, student attendance, and staff development. He/she collaborates with the principal, staff, students and parents to develop and implement school “spirit” programs, and special parent/family events to create a positive learning environment for all children. The Student Advisor also serves as the resident administrator in the event of the principal’s absence

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Valid Arizona Teacher’s Certificate
  • Three (3) years successful teaching experience
  • Must be in compliance with Arizona State law regarding “Highly Qualified Teacher” standards
  • Arizona Structured English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement; or 45 SEI hours (or able to obtain within first year of school employment in Arizona); or Bilingual Endorsement; or English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement is required
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Knowledge of technology including computers (Word, Excel, SchoolMaster), copiers, fax machines, etc.
  • Must be capable of dealing with several assignments concurrently regarding a variety of issues
  • Strong knowledge of the English language including reading, writing and oral communication with extensive skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Knowledge of Spanish including reading, writing and oral communication is desired
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with administration, staff and students
  • Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of effective classroom and/or school management and discipline procedures
  • Grants and grant writing
  • Arithmetic and basic mathematic procedures
  • Policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the District and the schools

Ability to:

  • Comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
  • Prioritize work, take initiative, adhere to time restraints and attend to multiple tasks concurrently
  • Work effectively with a diverse community
  • Effectively communicate ideas and programs to staff, students, parents, and community, etc.
  • Participate in staff selection, assignment and orientation as requested

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Discipline

  • Process discipline referrals
  • Document referrals in School Master
  • Inform parents of a students’ behavior
  • Establish behavior plans, track students’ behavior and assist them with assessing their own behavior
  • Establish student support groups to assist in appropriate social behaviors and problem solving skills
  • Make referrals to outside agencies when necessary (i.e. Touchstone)

Student Attendance

  • Investigate and follow-up on students who frequently are absent or tardy
  • Refer parent to Family Support or mediation
  • File Truancy papers

Family Support Team

  • Attend Family Support Meetings
  • Assist with agendas for Family Support
  • Observe students in several places around doing
  • Monitor and follow-up on plans and goals

School Spirit

  • Implement and monitor Character Counts program
  • Establish guidelines for behavior
  • Establish programs to reward “Kids of Character”
  • Introduce the “Don’t Laugh at Me” bullying program
  • Plan and implement School Spirit Days
  • Implement and monitor a School Store
  • Plan and implement Campus Clean-up program
  • Collaborate with Student Council

Parent Participation

  • Make home visits as needed
  • Attend Open House
  • Attend Thanksgiving Community Dinner
  • Work with Artist in Residence and assist as needed
  • Participate in the school carnival
  • Plan, implement, and/or attend Multi-cultural activities and events
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of a school Talent Show

High Stakes Testing and Grant Writing

  • Assist with the organization of testing materials
  • Assist with packaging completed testing materials
  • Locate and assist with the writing of grants

Professional and Personal

  • Acting principal in the event that the principal is absent or away from campus
  • Substitute in a classroom in the event that the assigned teacher is absent or observing other teachers
  • Cover playground duties in the event that the teacher/assistant are absent
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/in services, attend professional meetings, read professional journals and publications, etc. for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
  • Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board, the assigned school and the District
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the principal or his/her designee

Length of Employment:

  • Nine (9) months
  • School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year

Reports to: Building Principal

Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy GDO
