Responsibilities
  • Use CRM software to maintain a database of current information on new sales opportunities as well as existing customers
  • Generate repeat customers by persistently following up with existing customers via phone calls, emails, or other forms of communication
  • Close deals that achieve the best deal possible by upselling
  • Produce sales reports on a regular basis to present a status update on progress towards company customer acquisition goals

Further, we have found these to be the personal character traits that allow for excellence in this position:

Product knowledge

Product Knowledge is likely the most important skill you'll need to have as an inside sales representative. In other words, you must have intimate knowledge of the products you're selling. Customers are bound to ask you various questions, and because you can't know precisely what they'll ask, it's important to gather as much information as you can about every aspect of the product—from its benefits to its weaknesses. This will help you deliver a strong pitch to clients and customers alike and hopefully lead to a sale. Understanding the product and its uses will also help you gain the trust of your clients and customers.

Communication skills

It's crucial to have good verbal and written communication skills when working as an inside sales representative. This is mostly because you'll be engaging with customers over the phone and pitching your product to them. Your ability to effectively communicate will highly impact whether or not you made a sale. In a written sense, you'll likely have to draft memos or referrals. Making a connection with your clients and coworkers is vital in an inside sales representative role. Keep in mind that the impression you leave on your clients will impact the way they perceive your company and its brand.

Active listening skills

As an inside sales representative, it's important to display active listening skills. This is especially important over the phone as the client you're speaking with can't make note of your body language or eye contact. Practicing active listening by understanding your clients' needs and demonstrating that you genuinely care for them will also help you build rapport.

Rapport-building skills

Being able to make connections with your clients is an important skill to have in this field. The better the relationship you have with them, the more likely they are to purchase from you. Understanding who your target market is and where they're coming from will be beneficial not only your sales but your future in this career. As an inside sales representative, you'll need to effectively engage with a wide variety of personalities and ages. It's important to understand your client to build a rapport with them.

Time-management skills

Time-Mgmt skills are highly beneficial for all inside sales representatives. The better you're able to manage your time, the more time you'll have to speak to other clients and hopefully make additional sales. Not only will your sales grow, but your productivity will, too.

Organizational skills

If you're handling many accounts, it's important to have good organizational skills. The more organized you are, the less chance you have of forgetting about a client or customer. Being organized in this role will also alleviate any stress you may have.

Problem-solving skills

Employing critical thinking and problem-solving skills is vital in your role as an inside sales representative. You need to know how to adapt to various situations or problems as they arise and not let them affect the quality of your work. Make sure you're open to new solutions and implement them as the need arises.

Technology skills

As an inside sales representative, you'll need to understand and optimize Microsoft Office Suite (namely Outlook, Word, Excel and SharePoint), EZLynx (our main customer relationship management system), and other software used by the agency. Knowing how to properly use it will greatly improve your efficiency in the workplace. There are several CRM features you can utilize that will make your day-to-day easier, such as task reminders or bulk email sending.

Information-gathering skills

As an inside sales representative, you'll need to be a good researcher with the ability to glean accurate information about competitors, market trends, current vendors and your various potential clients. The information and knowledge you gather will help you make better decisions when it comes to selling your company's various products.

Collaborative skills

Being able to work as part of a team and effectively collaborate with other sales representatives is a highly useful tool in this role. Likely, you'll also be working with sales executives on larger clients. Displaying empathy and being a good team player will help both of you close a sale for your company.

Conflict management skills

In your role as an inside sales representative, you're bound to hear various rejections and complaints. The better you are at managing conflict and having a proactive attitude, the more likely you are to have a higher sales performance.

Prospecting skills

As an inside sales representative, it's important to have good prospecting skills. A prospect is someone you could see being interested in the product your company is selling. Effectively prospecting ensures you'll have customer sales in the future.

Closing skills

Your ability to hone the above skills will greatly impact your closing skills, or in other words, the probability of you achieving more deals. In essence, this skill is the culmination of all the other skills and their effectiveness.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required, college experience is highly valued
  • 1 year of sales experience converting qualified opportunities in a sales representative position

  • Must hold a valid, state-issued insurance license for the states of Texas and/or Oklahoma: Property and Casualty Insurance License and/or General Lines Insurance License
  • Experience with the software system we use the most, EZLynx, is preferred
Compensation
$50,000 - $65,000 yearly
