Four Rivers Sanitation Authority is Hiring an Utility Technician Near Rockford, IL

Serves the public by actively participating in the repairing of defects, in large and small sewer pipe and manholes, and to improve the overall health and efficiency of Four Rivers Collection Systems. Participates in the restoration of all job sites.

General Statement of Duties

Under immediate supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in a variety of sewer location, installation, and maintenance tasks which require unskilled to semi-skilled labor; operates a variety of vehicles and light equipment; assist operations and maintenance staff in their work; performs other duties as assigned by Management.

Essential Functions (Illustrative Only)

Interprets construction diagrams and uses engineering equipment such as a metal detector, tape, and level in order to locate sewers, per JULIE and Four Rivers requirements.

Maintains logs and records, per Four Rivers and JULIE requirements.

Sets up and breaks down sewer maintenance equipment and may operate Four Rivers vehicles such as container truck or garbage truck as required.

Performs unskilled labor tasks in constructing or maintaining sewer system equipment and facilities and placing of barricades as directed.

Performs routine maintenance checks and refills gas, water, oil, etc. in Four Rivers vehicles and portable equipment.

Assists equipment operators, Technical Equipment Operator/TV Truck and other skilled Utility Technicians as directed.

Assists in training of Utility Technician.

Reconstruct manhole inverts.

May operate heavy equipment when directed by supervision.

Perform hand shoveling during trench excavation; snap clay pipe; saw PVC or DIP pipe and make sewer connection using a variety of different types of fittings.

Operate light equipment which includes: lawn tractors with attachments and skid steer loader with attachments.

Adheres to all safety procedures, practices and requirements.

Accurately tracks and approves timesheets, makes appropriate time off requests, and processes benefit, leave, and training needs and requests through software on smartphone or computer.

Represents Four Rivers Sanitation Authority and its policies in a positive manner internally and externally.

Provides superior internal and external customer service.

Performs other duties as assigned by Management.

Supervision Received

Works under the general supervision of the Sewer Construction Team Lead, or other administrative superior who assigns and reviews work. Completed work is reviewed as needed for accuracy and timeliness and for overall results achieved.

Supervision Exercised

May assist in directing crew members in the safe and efficient completion of various construction task. Represents Four Rivers Sanitation Authority and its policies in a positive manner internally and externally.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in in all kinds of weather. Employees are required to take appropriate safety precautions to minimize exposure to raw sewerage, odors, noise from machinery, grease and chemicals. Employees are required to take appropriate safety measures working around excavation equipment, excavation sites and vehicle traffic. Standing, walking, reaching, handling equipment and tools, climbing ladders, crawling, squatting and bending are daily physical demands. Repetitive lifting of items weighing over 50 pounds is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Has good knowledge of vehicle operation, of civil engineering measurement and record keeping practices of sewer construction and repair.

Has some skill in following simple verbal instructions, in performing technical measurements, in operating construction equipment and hand tools.

Must demonstrate excellent internal and external customer service skills.

Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor and perform occasional lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds; to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Acceptable Experience & Training:

Six (6) months of experience in general laboring tasks or in related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of a valid State of Illinois license at time of hire with a driving record suitable to Four Rivers. Possession of a Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement at time of hire preferred.

Candidates who do not possess a Class A driver’s with tanker endorsement for combination vehicles of 26,001 or more pounds at time of hire must successfully complete an in-house house CDL training course within 90 days of employment. Four Rivers in-house CDL training is equivalent to CDL training offered by Rock Valley College. Participants of the inhouse CDL training must sign an acknowledgement to repay Four Rivers for all training costs associated with obtaining a Class A driver’s license if they leave before completing one (1) full year of employment. Repayment requirements expire after the candidate successfully completes one year of employment.
