Rex and Margaret Fortune School of Education is a comprehensive education system including, non-profit preschools, a network of tuition-free, public charter schools (TK-12th), and a school of education with a masters programs and educator preparations programs accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. in Sacramento/San Bernardino County. We prepare students for college starting in preschool Transitional Kindergarten in San Bernardino and Sacramento Counties and are focused on closing the African American achievement gap.

Job Summary: This summer, it’s more critical than ever that we offer programming to prevent summer learning loss. In addition to academics, we also know there is a tremendous need to consider the social and emotional well-being of our scholars. As such, we want to offer a comprehensive summer program that really considers all of these elements and have decided to partner with the National Summer School Initiative (NSSI) to offer an optional experience for students in grades K-12. We would like to invite you to be a part of Fortune School’s Summer School Institute, as a Leader/Coach, in partnership with NSSI. This is a great opportunity to build your skills through cutting-edge training, and support our scholars to avoid learning loss. NSSI is a nationwide summer school that offers an engaging, content-rich, and innovative experience for scholars. Classes will leverage world-class Literature (novel studies and close reading) & Math (problem-solving and math foundations) curriculum, in addition to a daily morning meeting/advisory.

Key components of the program include:

  • Mandatory: Leader/Coach Training Institute and Teacher Institute
May 22-23; June 13, 2024
  • Site-based Training: June 13 and 14, 2024
  • A 5-week student academic program
Session Dates: June 17-July 23
  • Daily student schedule from 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • Ongoing weekly PD for teachers and coaches, as well as observation and feedback.
  • Leaders/Coaches must also attend Leader/Coach Training and Teacher Institute Week.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE CANNOT ACCOMMODATE SPECIAL SCHEDULES DUE TO OUTSIDE OBLIGATIONS.
What does a typical day look like?
  • 8:00 - 8:15 am - Breakfast served
  • 8:15 - 8:30 am - Morning Connection/Celebration/Challenge (CCC)
  • 8:30 - 9:15 am - Novel Studies
  • 9:15 - 9:25 am - BREAK
  • 9:25 - 10:10 am - Close Reading 
  • 10:10 - 10:20 am - BREAK 
  • 10:20 - 11:05 am - Math Problem Solving
  • 11:05 am - 12:00 pm - Math Foundations
  • 12:00-5:00 pm - Excursions
  • 12:00-12:30 pm - Scholar Lunch
  • 12:30-5:00 pm Enrichment activities through Fortune Excursions
Leader/Coach Role & Responsibilities:
  • Leaders/coaches will work with a group of teachers. Participants and/or graduates of Fortune’s School Leadership Program, as well as Teachers are encouraged to apply for this role. 
Key responsibilities for admin/coach position include:
  • Daily:
  • Serve as the communication hub for teachers and parents
  • Serve as the point of contact for attendance, parent concerns, and scholar conduct 
  • Problem-solve technology issues for teachers
  • Engage in intellectual preparation with teachers, which involves looking at scholar work
  • Ensure teachers are engaged in weekly PD sessions
  • Ensure Excursions Instructors are meeting expectations for supervisions and activities facilitation
  • Send out regular emails (usually daily) to all teachers updating them on PDs, surveys, any additional deliverables
  • Weekly: 
  • Create an observation schedule to provide weekly feedback to teachers - ensuring each teacher receives feedback once/a week (20-30 minutes)
  • Attend weekly leader/coach training to develop skills in observation and debrief cycles (1 time per week)
  • Attend weekly teacher PD (weekly)
  • As needed, model/teach lessons for novice and/or struggling teachers
Leader/Coach Training:
  • Attend MANDATORY Leader/Coach Training: May 22-23, 2024 (You will need to secure a substitute for these training days.)
  • Attend MANDATORY Teacher Training Institute and complete any necessary pre-work (for literature this will include reading a novel): June 13, 2024
  • Facilitate a site-based professional development on June 13, from 1:00-4:00 and June 14, 2024
  • Attend Weekly Leader/Coach PD: Attend 1x a week Leader/Coach PD: Tuesdays 1:30-2:30 PM
Frequently Asked Questions: What does the Leader/Coach do?
  • They are the jack-of-all-trades to keep the summer running. All issues of teacher attendance and coverages, scholar attendance, scholar discipline, parent concerns, and technology come to them. They are responsible for making sure every class is meeting expectations, so they are spot-checking in person classrooms, feedback quality, etc. This is a great opportunity for participants and/or graduates of Fortune’s School Leadership Program, as well as Teachers.
Is there an assessment?
  • Yes. NSSI plans to use a pre- and post-assessment for both Literature and Math.
What’s in the training week?
  • Training will include sessions on instructional vision, practice in instructional delivery, tutorials for using tech resources, opportunities for practice and teaching preparation, and time to prepare and contact families. Coach/Administrators must attend these amazing Professional Development opportunities.

Is there a stipend? Yes. All Leaders/Coaches will receive a $7000 stipend.
