Fort Valley State University is Hiring a Director of Transportation Near Fort Valley, GA

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the planning, directing, and coordinating university vehicle and equipment maintenance activities. Duties include but are not limited to managing and supervising the fleet; vehicle and equipment maintenance; preventative maintenance programs and parts inventory; development of long-range plans and programs, determination of compliance with current directives, facility planning and programming. The position also oversees the use of fleet vehicles for students traveling to designate areas on and off-campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and supervises work of the administrative, clerical and maintenance personnel.
  • Provides outstanding customer service to operating departments via expert assistance and support for fleet service functions.
  • Directs and monitors internal procedures and management systems for control and utilization of vehicles and equipment and directs improvement implementations.
  • Maintains an inventory of vehicles available for employee and team travel and coordinates the acquisition, transfer, and disposal of surplus motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Serves as the University liaison with the State of Georgia (DOAS) Transportation unit to procure or surplus vehicles for fleet.
  • Maintain and ensure University compliance with Board of Regents policies and procedures, federal, state, and local laws and regulations (including DOAS, DOT, and FMSCA) related to risk management, safety, and transportation. Make recommendations for changes to ensure compliance.
  • Oversees budget to ensure purchases are within approved budgetary limitations and guidelines and performs ongoing analysis for operational decisions.
  • Participates in long-range planning, capital outlay, improvement projects and annual departmental budget preparation.
  • Serves as primary database administrator for computerized maintenance management software and fuel access systems.
  • Complete accident reports and facilitates the collision repair process by collecting police reports, initiating claims, creating work orders, coordinating repairs, and returning completed vehicles to user departments.
  • Assist in the development of shuttle schedules, routes, and transfer points for students and for special events.
  • Manage third-party fleet management contracts and invoices to issue requisitions for service and perform service validation.
  • Plan and provide vehicle and golf cart trainings as outlined by DOAS to the campus community.
  • Oversees preventative maintenance programs to ensure timely service and repair of all fleet vehicles, shuttles, and buses.
  • Oversee and manage shuttle and bus drivers.
  • Act as backup shuttle driver in the event the primary driver is not available.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Professional experience may be considered for substitution of required degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience in fleet management and equipment maintenance; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must be attentive to detail and have a strong customer orientation.
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver License
  • CDL License with P Endorsement within 1 year of hire
  • Must be able to complete and successfully pass yearly Georgia Department of Transportation (GA DOT) Physical and Exam.
  • Must successfully complete an MVR and criminal background.
  • Must be able to maintain flexibility and openness to changing work priorities and conditions; simultaneously managing multiple tasks/projects.
  • Ability to work weekends and flexible hours.
  • Must be able to work well with people, general public, vendors, community organizations, and staff.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights, weekends and beyond normal working hour as schedule requires.
  • Work is performed both indoors in a climate-controlled environment and outdoors.
  • Requires the physical mobility to sit or walk for moderate periods of time and to occasionally carry or lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
