Overview

The mission of Forsyth Farmers' Market is to promote understanding and participation in a local food system that supports sustainable production and increases access to local products. We recognize the challenges many experience in Savannah to find fresh, nutritious food and strive to provide options that are physically and financially accessible. We work to do this by highlighting the reciprocal nature of the relationship between food producers and consumers, while confronting the structural barriers to food access that exist.

The Bilingual Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for the organization, operation, and management of the engagement of the Hispanic population at the market (7-8 hours per week) and 912 Food Farmacy (10-15 hours per week). Their efforts are critical to building and developing the capacity of internal and external stakeholders to understand and more effectively work with limited English, international, and immigrant families. The bilingual community outreach specialist creates, organizes, and executes community outreach activities and events that support engaging families as equal partners to help quell nutrition insecurity and health-disparities. They meet and work with stakeholders, including community members, FFM board members, vendors, and staff. Forsyth Farmers’ Market ensures that the cultural and linguistic needs of all limited English communities and families are met through a caring culture of trust and collaboration.

Responsibilities include:

Overall:

  • Communicating effectively in English and Spanish, orally and in writing.
  • Translating all FFM and 912FF materials in a culturally appropriate manner to yield more participation from the Hispanic communities.
  • Working evenings and weekends to provide support to the community.
  • Supporting other team members at community workshops and events.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to develop a culture of collaboration and trust while advocating for the limited English and immigrant communities.
  • Providing translation, interpretation, and phone support to FFM personnel.
  • Attending and scheduling meetings and events beyond the work day and on weekends to ensure maximum participation.
  • Seeking new and innovative ways to more effectively engage limited English and immigrant families within the community.

Saturday Market:

  • Be on-site from the start of setup until the last vendor leaves the market (generally 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
  • Assist Director of Community Engagement in achieving market goals, including but not limited to merchandising, social media, and fundraising.
  • Work with other employees and volunteers to set up and tear down all signage, tables, and displays and any other equipment for the market.
  • Serve as a contact person for customers, vendors, community spotlights, and volunteers.
  • Promote FFM’s SNAP enrollment services and EBT doubling program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Engagement.

912 Food Farmacy:

  • Work weekly onsite events in the evening.
  • Communicate with program participants to concisely describe the program and incentive usage.
  • Create, review, and revise materials used in workshops, events, and classes for limited English and immigrant communities and families.
  • Create and support parent and community engagement initiatives and continually seek opportunities to leverage internal and external resources for limited English, international, and immigrant communities and families.
  • Manage and support a caseload of limited English and immigrant communities and families with special circumstances and needs requiring consistent communication, assistance, and follow up with various FFM departments.
  • Engage and educate potential stakeholders and participants on FFM programs.
  • Organize, manage, and analyze data and evidence of participation of limited English and immigrant community and family engagement.
  • Collaborate with Nutrition Educator on development of culturally appropriate curriculum focused around basic nutrition concepts and familiarity with seasonal/local produce.
  • Work with other employees and volunteers to set up and tear down all signage, tables, and displays and any other equipment for events, including on and off Farm Truck 912.
  • Communicate regularly with the evaluation team to ensure consistent and accurate collection of data and grant reporting.
  • Participation in calls with cross-site evaluation and funders as needed throughout the grant period.
  • Contribute to grant writing/fundraising efforts to ensure the sustainability of the program.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience (minimum) working with limited English and immigrant families and communities, and knowledge and understanding of the needs and concerns of these groups.
  • Strong networking and interpersonal skills to assist in the development of strategic partnerships and collaborative projects. Ideally, some leadership in customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience working in low-wealth communities and with diverse racial and/or ethnic communities.
  • Experience in practical application of social justice concepts.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Cultural competency and understanding of social determinants of health.
  • Ability to communicate with many types of people in many settings.
  • Comfort with basic data collection and analysis using a variety of methods.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Google Workspace.

Reporting: The Bilingual Community Outreach Specialist reports directly to the Director of Community Engagement.

Compensation: Starts at $20/hr, with a minimum of 20 hours a week. Position has potential to expand to full-time depending on demand.
