Forest Hills Public School District is Hiring a Bus Driver Near Grand Rapids, MI

School Bus Driver

Transportation

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, this individual will drive a school bus to provide safe and efficient transportation for students so that they may enjoy and take full advantage of the district’s curriculum and extracurricular activities.

PAY GRADE: Starting at $21.63 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Must meet all State of Michigan and Forest Hills requirements for eligibility to drive a school bus.
  2. Must successfully complete the State of Michigan’s drivers school
  3. Must pass an annual certification physical.
  4. Must have a valid Michigan drivers license (CDL).
  5. Prior experience working with children and the public a plus.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Must operate and maintain the bus in a safe manner.
  • Must maintain route schedules and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Must maintain a positive and disciplined atmosphere on the bus at all times and during trips.
  • Inspects bus for mechanical defects and checks gas, oil and water levels before departure.
  • Drives bus along assigned route and schedule. Stops only at authorized stops.
  • Complies with all traffic and safety regulations related to operating a school bus.
  • Updates route information as necessary.
  • Assures that authorized students load and unload the bus in a safe manner.
  • Maintains discipline when students are on the bus and reports discipline problems to the proper authority.
  • Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Keeps bus clean, enforces regulations against smoking, eating and littering on the bus.
  • Reports delays, injuries or accidents and fills out related reports.
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.
  • Operates a variety of bus types and sizes based on the requirement of the route/trip.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district. Hours may vary according to the route and/or trips assigned. Salary per the Master Agreement between F.H. Board of Education and F.H. Bus Drivers Association. All active drivers will receive vision insurance. Eligible employees may elect cash in lieu of benefits. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.

Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: Remaining upright on the feet particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken work; those activities where detailed or import spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
