Job Title: TEMPORARY TEACHER - ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD)


POSITION SUMMARY

The primary role of the English Language Development (ELD) teacher is to teach systematic ELD (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to English Language Learners (ELLs) grouped by language proficiency, to monitor their progress toward proficiency through on-going assessment and to meet all district, state, and federal requirements concerning the instruction of ELD students. The ELD teacher reports to the Principal or Designated Administrator.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Delivers
    comprehensible ELD instruction in the classroom
  • Aligns ELD lessons with classroom instruction
  • Uses FGSD required ELD Curriculum for instruction
  • Documents monthly assigned EL students mastery of forms in the district’s ELD Forms Alignment Database
  • Models best practices for EL learning (e.g. Systematic ELD, GLAD, Constructing Meaning, SIOP, literacy instruction) for classroom teachers.
  • Prepares students for the annual ELPA21 assessment
  • Collects and analyzes formative and summative assessment data with appropriate building data teams to inform further instruction and intervention as needed
  • Communicates and advocates for EL families
  • Works under the guidance and direction of the building’s EL facilitator
  • Monitors and documents EL’s language development proficiency to inform instruction.
  • Provides interventions for ELs as needed.
  • Exits EL students following Exit Procedures.
  • Participates in meetings to ensure continuity of the ELD programs K-12.
  • Participates in Pre-referral, IEP, and EBIS meetings if necessary.
  • Provides information to parents concerning ELD instruction and progress in English Language Proficiency.
  • Advocates for ELs and families with administration, teachers, counselors, and other District staff.
  • Supports the eligibility of ELs to other services, TAG/Sped/Title I/others.
  • Other duties as needed to provide quality ELD instruction to all eligible students and to meet all state and federal requirements.
  • Provides a variety of situational appropriate instructional techniques and methods
    • Promotes high levels of achievement in relation to individual abilities
    • Uses techniques and methodologies appropriate to EL student abilities
    • Uses current and relevant subject matter for instruction
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use research-based principles of effective instruction
    • Organizes instruction using learning objectives with clearly defined student outcomes
    • Employs teaching strategies congruent with planned student outcomes
    • Selects teaching strategies emphasizing involvement
    • Monitors student learning and paces instruction accordingly
  • Develops and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective EL student learning
    • Develops written rules of classroom behavior and communicates those rules to all students
    • Enforces written rules for classroom behavior
    • Communicates goals and academic expectations to students
    • Provides for the health and safety of students in all instructional settings
  • Prepares effectively for class
    • Prepares daily lesson plans using the district’s ELD curriculum
    • Provides instruction based on District approved curriculum and standards
    • Provide instruction predicated on course goals and objectives
  • Develops and communicate appropriate progress grading standards to students
    • Establishes written grading standards that are clear and incorporate a variety of graded activities
    • Assures that grading standards are explained, understood by the students, and are available to parents
  • Develops and maintain positive interpersonal relationships
    • Models personal behaviors of honesty, fairness, courtesy and consideration
    • Maintains a cooperative relationship with administration staff, students and parents
    • Communicates with parents, counselors and students
    • Communicates with classified, licensed and administrative staff
    • Instructs and directs assigned instructional assistants to maximize delivery of instructional services
  • Provides documentation of student progress
    • Provides timely and accurate feedback/documentation to students and parents
    • Maintains appropriate records of student performance
    • Assigns and checks homework and provides feedback, when appropriate
    • Keeps parents and teachers informed through written and oral communication
  • Builds motivation and interest in learning
    • Exhibits personal interest and encourage student interest in the subject area
    • Maintains a current awareness of literature/activities in reading
  • Maintains an ongoing personal program of professional growth and development
    • Develops and implement annually an approved plan for professional growth and development
    • Identifies and requests to attend professional workshop activities intended to increase the teacher’s instructional effectiveness
    • Participates in District sponsored in-service offerings appropriate to assignment
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal and/or superintendent
    • Performs duties in accordance with District policy and terms set forth in the negotiated agreement
    • Assists in the enforcement of school and District rules and policies
    • Assumes a share of responsibility for non-classroom student activities with the assigned workday

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


    Education and Experience Required

    • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of education
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) Preferred
    • Competence in teaching English Language Development

    Skills

    • Maintains integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons

    Knowledge

    • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code
    • Knowledge of Systematic ELD
    • Knowledge of Guided Language Acquisition Development (GLAD)
    • Training and experience in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)
    • Knowledge of Constructing Meaning
    • Knowledge of State of Oregon ELP standards

    Abilities

    • Demonstrates command of oral and written English language
    • Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
    • Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job
    • Ability to work harmoniously with others

    Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required

    • Holds an appropriate license from Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon with an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement.
