Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

Be part of the Department for International Trade’s mission to drive more trade and investment between North America and the UK. Based at the British Embassy in Washington, DC the Trade & Investment Associate will support the Trade & Investment Officer for Aid Funded Business throughout the DC region. You will be part of the North America team with responsibility for the Multi-Lateral Development Portfolio, including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). The role will also be a valued contributor to the Washington, DC based regional team and will work closely with the UK delegation to the world bank and with the regional colleagues based around the UK.


Roles and responsibilities:

Help UK-based firms export through multilateral development programmes:

  • Support the Trade & Investment Officer in developing US development agency opportunities for a broad range of UK exporters.
  • Develop knowledge of the Development sector and the procurement processes at the Multi-lateral Development Banks (MDBs) / International Finance Institutions (IFIs).
  • Engage in regular networking that strengthens the Aid Funded business portfolio by generating new opportunities with existing and potential partners.
  • Match & track procurement opportunities with the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Millennium Challenge Corporation & USAID. Assist in their partnering & consortia formation.
  • Support positive relationships with US and UK business leaders, trade associations, regional Aid-Funded Business providers and other key buyers/partners within the Aid-Funded Business industries.

Work to Support HMG Stakeholders With AFB Priorities:

  • Advise our sector teams on the use of export credit guarantee products and capture UK Export Finance applications in conjunction with a deal origination team in London.
  • Support high-profile visits, including UK Ministerial and VIP delegations through scheduling high-level meetings, organising activities, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Support cross-team projects to advance UK prosperity and trade policy goals.

Events and Administrative/Programme Support:

  • Support trade group visits and trade show events to foster economic opportunities for the UK and US.
  • Consult with clients, external stakeholders and partners to create and manage events with DC-based development organisations.
  • Provide operational and administrative support including maintaining client and project databases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to use a variety of online and social media tools.
  • Must be able to attend events outside of office hours and undertake travel within the US and UK up to 10% of your time.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with multi-lateral institutions. For example: the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank etc.
  • Knowledge of public procurement.
  • Spanish or French language proficiency.

Working patterns

This role is 40 hours a week.
