Main purpose of job:
The British Government’s Embassy in Washington DC has an exciting opportunity for a committed individual to join the British Embassy postal team as a Mail Room Operative. This role will report directly to the Mail Room Supervisor.
The Mail Room staff provide a comprehensive range of services including, collection of mail, sorting and onwards forwarding and distribution of items. This service supports both staff internal to the Embassy and the wider footprint across the United States.

The British Forces Post Office provides customer support to the wider British Defence Staff based at the British Embassy, Washington DC and US sites across North America, providing a high quality postal service.

Working patterns:
The mail room operates from 0600-1500 Monday through Thursday. Fridays 0600-1200. There is a requirement to undertake some accounts work including mail deliveries and collections during this time, prior to the mail room opening to customers at 0730.
This post is for Full time employment (40 hours per week).

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
