Position: Field Foreman (Full-Time/Non-Exempt)

Hiring Salary Range: $60,907 - $71,655

Full Salary Range: $60,907 - $82,404

Under the general supervision of the Urban Parks Supervisor, this position is responsible for managing the daily operation of Urban Parks and its facilities by assigning, participating, and completing tasks associated with park maintenance. Urban Parks includes multiple community/neighborhood parks, greenbelts and trails throughout the District. Reporting for work will occur at the District's Maintenance & Service Center located near Kipling Pkwy & Hwy 285. The Field Foreman ensures the activities of the maintenance staff are complete in an efficient and timely manner. Park maintenance tasks include landscaping, irrigation, turf renovation, trails, construction projects, playgrounds, ballfield maintenance, and tennis and pickleball courts. Will be required to work some weekends and holidays.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a working foreman responsible for all areas of the Urban Parks
  • Plan, assign, direct and monitor the daily activities of personnel and equipment engaged in park maintenance work.
  • Perform and/or direct a crew to execute maintenance of developed park land, open space, and trails. Includes, but is not limited to; turf maintenance, mowing, irrigation, trimming, edging, seeding, sodding, fertilizing, aerating, general landscaping and gardening, horticulture practices, chemical application, trash removal/disposal, snow removal, maintenance of all shelters, playgrounds, play courts, parking lots, trails and athletic fields, etc.
  • Ensure that ballfield complex is always maintained at the highest level, including but not limited to; proper infield preparation and maintenance, all types of irrigation adjusted and effective, outfields are mowed and trimmed, edges are straight and clean, dugouts and bleachers are clean and safe, etc.
  • Ensure that shelters, amphitheater and other rented spaces are suitable for their appropriate use at their reserved time including; trash and debris removed, hazards removed, graffiti removed, amenities safe and operable, etc. As well as respond to permit holders' inquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Ensure the Splash Park is always safe and enjoyable in regards to water quality, mechanical operation, playablility and scheduling.
  • Enforce policies, regulations, and safety standards by training staff in safe equipment operation and maintenance, safe use of hand tools, and proper lifting techniques.
  • Maintain constant contact with crew members to assess quality and completion of assigned work.
  • Develop and maintain a high level of communication with other staff members including; Park Supervisor, Mechanic, Irrigation Technician, subordinates and other department staff.
  • Work closely with outside vendors, permit holders and general public in planning and execution of events in order to protect park property and policies and maximize their enjoyment
  • Prepare various reports through a variety of means: written, computer, oral
  • Assist in set up and tear down of equipment for various park events and recreation programs.
  • Assist in the hiring, training and evaluation of seasonal staff members
  • Maintain excellent public relations through timely, accurate and courteous responses

Working Environment:

90% or more of the work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and requires the ability to drive to park and building locations. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, wet, snow, humid or icy conditions. Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, dusts, mists, gases, grasses, molds, fertilizers, solvents, oils, and greases. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of work hazards, safety procedures, and public safety matters
  • Graduation from high school or completion of GED and five (5) years experience in turf maintenance, irrigation and horticulture; including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Park Administration, Grounds Maintenance, Landscape Architecture, Agriculture, or directly related field is preferred.
  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid or the ability to obtain such certifications within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.
  • Possession of current certification or within 6 months in one of the following upon hire:
      • C.D.L. Class A
      • Landscape Irrigation Auditor
      • Cross Connection Control
      • Playground Inspector
      • ISA Certified Arborist
      • Chemical Pesticide Application
      • Landscape Technician
      • Master Gardeners
      • Sports Field Manager
      • 8 Approved Training Hours Annually
      • Approved Applicable Certification/Courses
      • Certified Irrigation Technician
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and general office equipment (computer, copier, fax, phone, etc.). Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment involved in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas and turf and sports turf practices. Requires knowledge of the chemical and cultural controls for disease, including certification for and the proper usage of agrochemicals, fertilizers, and other soil additives. Requires knowledge of the operation of irrigation systems.
